NEW YORK, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- LEGO Group, the worlds leading construction
toy manufacturer, today announces a partnership with Lucasfilm Ltd. to produce

Three worldwide blockbuster films, and the highly anticipated May 2008 premiere
of the new Indiana Jones movie, will provide inspiration for a series of highly
iconic and action-packed build-and-play adventures of the rogue archaeologist
and hero.
There is such a natural synergy between Lucasfilm and LEGO enthusiasts of all

Well, he does. Sort of. They both have the same roundish facial structure, a
rather unnoticable nose (even if you try to look for it, its so unnoticable
that youll fail to do so), and brown eyebrows. Indy has stubble, though, which
some might say is the reason he fails to keep the same woman around from one
movie to the next, compared to Han who practically ends up married by the end of
his trilogy (others would say its part of what makes Indiana Jones the manliest
mans man in movies, while Han Solo ended up getting bumped to third by that
British guy in the tux).

I suppose this means the death knell (or at least on-hold status) for the

Classic Space and Star Wars have two distinct looks. I think the only real
difference between the Adventurers line and anything they do with Indiana Jones
would be in the characters. Vehicles, temples, tombs, etc. are pretty generic.
Unlike Space and Star Wars, the Adventurers and Indy could easily mix. Pippin
Reed could play a leading lady, and Professor Kilroy already looks like Indys
father.
Im actually looking forward to the line as a way to increase my Adventurers
collection, as opposed to replacing it.

But wait - since the old Adventurers and upcoming Indy line share so many
similarities, wouldnt it make more sense to only have one and not both?
Besides, despite the two distinct looks of Classic Space and Star Wars, it was
generally assumed that part of the SW licensing deal was to NOT have Classic
Space at the same time.

I guess that was what I was trying to say. Instead of looking at it as one
theme dying and another being created, Im looking at it as a continuation, just
with different characters. Especially since the last Adventurers set was
released four years ago. And similar to Tim, Ive got enough Johnny Thunder
figs to replace a roomful of Indianas if I need to.
From a marketing standpoint, it makes sense to me. Instead of trying to market
characters that arent that well known to the general public, the company can
cash in on characters that are well established, and tie in to a new movie, all
with existing parts.
Except the fedora. Hopefully theyll create a decent fedora.

Strangely enough, I started planning the project below not long before the
announcement for the official sets came and soon got frustrated over not
having the right hat :/ However, the new one seems just perfect!
So, here is my small contribution to the Indiana Jones universe, the Ark
of the Covenant:
Since it was hard to get a clear view on how the whole Ark should look like,
even from a DVD, I used as the reference the wonderful golden model shown
at indyprops.com.
I started with the big version, since it gave me the possibility for
more details (adding 1x1x2/3-slopes to the sides would have given an even
nicer shape, but I didnt have them at the moment).
I soon realized it was way out of scale and tried to make a smaller one.
Although less detailed and still a bit too big, I am much more happy with
it. The wings on the kneeling angels should be closer though (all four
of them should ideally meet in the middle), but I still havent find a
nice way to do it.
As always, any suggestions for improvements are more than welcome :)
Cheers,
Matija
P.S. Sorry to come so late with a followup, I was waiting for some crucial
parts to complete the Ark. In the meantime, a new picture became available
on the abovementioned Eurobricks forum, for those of us who dont follow it
regularily.

Unlike Space and Star Wars, it was always pretty obvious that Johnny Thunder and
the Adventurers theme was flirting with sparking off a copyright lawsuit from
Lucasfilm.
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Maybe *now* well get a minifig fedora (fingers crossed)!
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This could also be LEGOs way to slyly ease into a military theme. I wouldnt
be surprized if they avoid using swastikas and the like, which is just as well
perhaps. But I could see this generating all kinds of interestng minifigs and
maybe also new weapons.
Cool to see an indication that the sets may be from the first three movies as
well as the upcoming one. The German flying wing from Raiders... is just aching
to be turned into a set...
Also, the fanbase for the originalmovies is an older crowd, and Im hoping that
will translate into less juniorized minifig-scale sets. Certainly the SW
franchise set an impressive precedent.
This is good news indeed!

That symbol featured quite prominently in the films. Was there a special murfled
version made for the German market? Maybe lego could do the same, similar to
what they did with the Dino Attack theme.
Not that I particularly want to see a swastika in an official set(1) or

Given the success of all forms of the LEGO Star Wars game (LSW2-DS being the one

| Very interesting news! It raises all sorts of interesting questions. Besides
the WWII vehicles/weapons issue already brought up, and the question of how
these sets will deal with the swastika symbol so ubiquitous to the 1st and 3rd
Indy movies, here is what I am wondering:
Now that LEGO has moved away from its all-minifigs-are-yellow policy for their
movie licenses, white people are depicted with pink minifigs, and black
people are depicted with brown minifigs, but what will LEGO do for depicting
Asian people (Shanghai scene in Temple of Doom), Indians (rest of Temple of
Doom), South Americans (opening of Raiders), and Arabs (Raiders)?
Will each get their own new appropriate realistic skin tone? Will some be
lumped in as white (ie. pink) and other black (ie. brown)? Or will LEGO
not-so-subtlety dodge these issues by not avoiding making minifigs for
significant characters that would force this issue (as they did with Lando and
Mace for so long in the Star Wars line)?
And of course: will there be an official LEGO Hitler minifig?
We shall see.
-Brendan
P.S. New element watch: if that CG Indy minifig is an accurate representation of
the final product, looks like weve got a new minifig whip, and new minifig hat,
and a first-of-its-kind over-the-shoulder minifig accessory: the satchel.

The Asian issue has been neatly postponed for a later date by the simple fact
that they are not going to be releasing any ToD sets in this batch. Three sets
will come from Raiders (two of which are unlikely to feature any minifigs
besides Indy, Marion, and maybe a skeleton or two), one from Last Crusade (just
Indy, his dad, and some Germans), and four of undisclosed nature from the
upcoming Indiana Jones IV movie.
Middle Eastern people will probably be featured in the truck chase set from
Raiders, the South American tribesmen will probably be left out of the boulder
set (Im guessing this one will be limited to just the section of temple
interior where the boulder was located), and for Indians, the same reddish-brown
color used for African skintone would be perfectly fine. I mean, when you think
about it, theres a wide range of brown skintones found among people of African
descent, from nearly black at one extreme, to pale enough to appear more
Mediterranean at the other. The same holds true for Caucasian skintones, which
range from those who are unable to tan at all to George Hamilton. And yet
theres only one LEGO skintone for each. Id not be surprised if they do a
median skintone (and not the horrible dark-pink they used for the NBA minifigs)
to cover the bulk of Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Latin America, and
the Pacific islands. Neither of the two current skintones would work for much
of those regions, but as far as minifigs go, the issue has never been forced
based on the casting of the current licensed properties. Star Wars was
primarily white, some black, and lots of funky makeup. Harry Potter was also
primarily white. Avatar is Japanese (which is a lot closer to Caucasian
skintone than what would be needed for the aforementioned regions). Spongebob
is irrelevent. Batman and that other superhero property are largely white with
a bit of black thrown in for background characters. And that leaves one
property that can give any clue what theyd do for a median skintone. Dora.
Oddly enough, both the Dora and Diego Duplofigs have their own unique skintone,
with Dora being somewhere between the two white skintones (current and NBA), and
Diego being perhaps a bit darker than halfway between the two current skintones.
Between the two, I could see Diegos skintone being more useful than Doras, and
given the recent policy to trim down the color palette I wouldnt expect to see
both used.
|
And of course: will there be an official LEGO Hitler minifig?
|
I think its safe to say no on this one. The only two confirmed sets that are
likely to feature any Germans at all are the truck chase (Raiders) and the
motorcycle chase (Last Crusade). The only appearance of Hitler in the entire
trilogy so far was when he inadvertantly signed the Grail journal in a heavily
crowded street. There wasnt exactly a lot of action in that scene, so all that
a set based on it would be is a section of city street and a press of minifigs
around them, and the only point in releasing that would be to release an
official Hitler minifig, which, hopefully, isnt high on their list of Things To
Do.
|
P.S. New element watch: if that CG Indy minifig is an accurate representation
of the final product, looks like weve got a new minifig whip, and new
minifig hat, and a first-of-its-kind over-the-shoulder minifig accessory: the

|
Im sure it is accurate. I mean, look at the Star Wars line and how many
special pieces had to be crafted just to do it justice (aside from the
regretable 8-year delay on reasonably Star-Wars-y guns). Indy just wouldnt be
Indy in either a standard cowboy hat or a campaign hat, the old whip looks
better when used in its original purpose (a vine) or looped back on itself for
some sort of wagon/carriage driver, and as you so rightly pointed out, there is
no possible substitute for the satchel, aside from just painting it on the
minifig. I wouldnt expect to see many new weapons, though, since Indy always
uses a revolver, the scimitar already exists, and the tommygun (while entirely
inaccurate for a German soldier to wield) is likely to be used for any soldier
toting a submachine gun. This does bring up the interesting possibility of a
broom-handled mauser, which would be useful for both any German troops used in
this theme, as well as for Han Solo and Rebel pilots in the Star Wars theme.
