I just received this note from a colleague at LEGOLAND California.

LEGOLAND California needs Rebel Recruits!
During the weekend of April 30 - May 1, LEGOLAND California will be hosting the
LEGO Star Destroyer Building Competition, where an attempt will be made to break
the current speed build record. The
During this weekend event, we’ll attempt to break the current record of 54
minutes and 22 seconds held by the members of the New England LEGO Users Group
(NELUG).
(The Final Build Time set last weekend during Star Wars Celebration III in
Indianapolis was 1 hour 23 minutes!)
Rebel Builders need to be on-site at LEGOLAND from 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm on
Saturday and/or Sunday. Teams consist of 10 Rebel Builders each day. All Team
Members will receive return tickets to LEGOLAND California, and a gift bag with
Star Wars collectibles.

the park that weekend, as my other big passion/hobby is Starwars. I haven’t
built an ISD before, but I’m sure I’ll have fun. I’m also planning to bring my
R/C R2D2 along. Anyone else from SanDLUG or the San Diego area planning to make
it?

No doubt about that, Mat. Meeting dates are set by those who are holding the
meeting, so there isn’t much we can do. I’ll try to make it to the park on
Sunday, but I think I’m putting too much in my weekend already.
Take care and help prove that the west coast is superior in ISD building.

Poor planning! This event has been announced two times already with little
responce from anyone in California. First time was over a month ago. The
AFOL’s need to wake up here in CA.and get envolved. Not even the Michon’s have
come forth to break the record and they have more contest building skills then
anyome. I know it’s not possible for everyone to get involved all the time. but
I seem to remember the last time I was in the company of some LUGOLA members
they were complaining about not being invited to offical Lego events. Here it is
people! Along with a few people from Lugnet only the SPLTC will be at the build
this weekend.
PS: Dave Johann, their is two other clubs in California (SPLTC, BAYLUG)

Trying to keep communication strong between the LUGs and the LTCs in Cali has
never been easy. The LTCs and the LUGs tend to keep to themselves more often
then not. It’s simply a matter of what you are interested in building.
Besides, if you check the majority of the posts made to
http://news.lugnet.com/legoland/california/ before this week, you’ll see that
this even has NOT been mentioned at all. Heck, it’s not even listed as an
upcoming event on the sidebar. I only found out about it by cruising
legoland.com looking for upcoming events so as to warn LUGOLA about possible
upcoming conflicts. It was too late, as our meeting date had already been set
and the location confirmed.

I know it’s not possible for everyone to get involved all

Yep. It is here. Care to name the last time this happened? I’m one of the few
that can. This is the second time since the park opened that something planned
at Legoland has directly conflicted with a LUGOLA meeting date. I’d say those
are pretty good numbers myself. I’m certainly not upset with Legoland about this
- I’d never expect them to cater to any AFOL club.
Also, if memory serves, you are referring to an occasion where the LTCs were
informed, but the LUGs were not. That’s a completely different topic and one
that was resolved LONG ago.

No, there will be reps from each club there, of that I am certain. Heck, it
wouldn’t surprise me if SEALUG showed up in some way, shape, or form. I might
even be there on Sunday if I can get up early enough.

Yes, Paul, I was aware of that. I was in a bit of a hurry when I posted, so I
apologize if I offended you in some way. Since SPLTC seems to keep their
distance from most of the other clubs, I was unsure as to their current status.
BAYLUG doesn’t exactly have a short trip to Carlsbad, so I didn’t mention them
for a reason.

of it to you. My idea being you as a voice of LUGOLA would pass it along to

Here's the actual order of events - as you'll see there is a good reason why the
word did not get out even though I'm not proud of it.
mid February - I first get word of a possible LUGOLA meeting in late April.
March 1st - your message was received and I believe I responded to it as well on
that date. Given that I download email and don't leave it on the server, it was
deleted from adelphia's servers at that point.
Late March 1st - hard drive crash, main directory unobtainable.
March 1st - March 7th (or thereabouts)- All my attempts to revive said hard
drive are for nought. Hard drive sent off for repairs. Wife's laptop is used to
catch me up on all other business until HD is recovered.
April 2nd - LUGOLA meeting date of April 30th is confirmed with hosts.
April 4th - I discover the LLCA event on my own (D'OH!)
April 6th - Hard drive is returned and listed as 'unrecoverable'.
With all that happening, it's no big surprise that I completely forgot about
your email. I dropped the ball and I admit that. In the future, I would
recommend sending emails to myself and Scott Costello (keeper of lugola.org).
Bruce is a good idea as well as he is generally the most active member of the
group at this time.
I apologize to Adrian and to LUGOLA as a whole for messing this up. Normally I
am on top of such things, but the recent turn of events has messed up my
situation worse than expected (insufficient backups). I promise to be more 'on
the ball' in the future and will forward emails like Adrian's to Scott as a form
of 'backing up' information as well.

If anyone wants to point a finger you can point it at me. I was the one who
arranged the date with Ray, of course unaware of the Legoland thingy.
Seems to me that too much of a big deal is being made of this. I’m not saying
that the Legoland build isn’t important to some, but it isn’t important to
others at all. So just like life we’ll make our choices and have fun either way.
And yeah I can the see “well it’s a little unfair to those who would like to
attend both” but hey we’ll have another meeting and life will go on...

The build at Celebration III was a bit different from other speed builds,
because about half the team members were not AFoLs, and table/building space was
VERY limited.
However, being a veteran of four ISD speed builds (three were less than a week
ago), I MAY be able to offer some advice.
Our final build, was very easy, because we all knew what parts were required,
and how things fit. There were several times when I built sub-assemblies
without even looking. It may be a good idea to make the first day a “pratice”
run, where you don’t really worry about the time.
In our build, we had a few people getting parts, and the rest were building. In
most cases I was able to provide parts for the structure as fast as Jason could
build two of the triangles. On our last build, we just dumped all the beams,
friction pins, blue pins & some other required pieces into one of the white
boxes, and Jason pulled them from there.
Several of the teams we went against did a wonderful job of sorting pieces. In
fact, a couple still have very neat piles, when we were done with our build.
I’d suggest one or two sort the small stuff, while other start right away.
One builder started on kibble (as my wife calls it) right away. By the time the
structure was done, and had legs, that kibble was ready. The thing that slowed
us the most was the lower bridge & it’s kibble. That was the last thing
complete on every build. We had two builders on that, and it still ran slow.
Maybe three would be good.

Honestly, that may also have to do with the builders in question (I was one

True. It also made it easir on the mastr sorter, (me) who couldn’t stand up
much.

Depends how much you want to handicap us!
David Michon and Thomas Michon were both under 18 when they helped set the
(then) current US record at BrickFest last August. When I communicated with LLCA
about this IDS event, I was told that participants must be over 18.
For a company whose motto is “Only the best is good enough”, it sure doesn’t
make sense to exclude some of the best!
I have always disliked the term “AFOL” and avoid using it. Now I have another
reason to avoid it. I prefer SLB (Serious LEGO Builder), which knows no bounds
because of age.

I too dislike the term AFOL. I don't consider myself an "Adult Fan Of
LEGO", I consider LEGO my hobby and I am really nothing other than a
hobbyist.
