x-posted to .events.brickswest because BJ is going to be there, mabie
someone who is going can mention these ideas or suggestions or ask some
questions about it...

1.Lego should make something available to clubs to give out at events
(train clubs I am thinking of here). Something like "If you want to get
into lego trains yourself, here is what is available and where to get it from"

2.Lego should make more things that go with trains other engines and
rolling stock. Yes we are getting a new train station and a new cargo crane
this year but there should be more and better. For example, the yellow
train station would make a perfect legends set (if any parts LD doesnt have
access to were removed). Or even better, a new design for a train station.
Or mabie a level crossing. Or some kind of coal/water setup (designed to
look good next to the MOT trains), something like that would be a nice
medium sized/small set

3.Lego should make the Santa Fe B-Unit accessory pack alluded to when the
SFSC first came out.

4.Lego should make more space sets, more space accessory packs and more
space parts (there are a few sets out there that are good for space but not
very many). In particular, I want to see more "space" sets (be they
starwars or otherwise) that DONT use those curved panels and slopes and
canopies and stuff that TLC seems to be in love with lately. (I cant be the
only one that doesnt like those parts...)

and 5.Lego should make more technic sets like the 8430 crane, the blue
motorbike and so on (either reissues or even better, new designs). Stuff
with studded beams and stuff. Also and more importantly, make available
accessory packs containing the most commonly used technic parts (gears,
beams, pegs, engine parts, belts, pullies, plates with holes and stuff).
Dacta does do some accessory packs but not everyone can get that stuff.
Many parents probobly wouldnt know about it (but would know about shop @ home)

They do. The train catalog.

Frank's comment aside, what else could come from LEGO that'd you like to see?
Maybe a how to get started (LEGO instructions...)
<throwing out ideas>
How about a listing of LTC/LUGs to get the enthusiast aware of what may be
available in thier area?  (LEGO is providing this remember...)
How about a listing of online resources?
LUG/LTC contact sheet?
</thowing out ideas>

2.Lego should make more things that go with trains other engines and

Here's my issues with this, LEGO can only do so much, and Trains are a part
of the overall picture.  We all want more in our themes and I'm sure that
TLC picks how heavy to go in any given theme.  I'm split, I think LEGO would
do well to supply the train theme with more 'stuff.'  Seems to me there's a
pretty decent selection of trains and cars.  On par with the selection of
any other theme at least.  Water towers, crossings, fencing packs, er, what
else?  Maybe what I'm asking here is for more town?

3.Lego should make the Santa Fe B-Unit accessory pack alluded to when the
SFSC first came out.

Is this something the AFOL can't do?

4.Lego should make more space sets, more space accessory packs and more

I think they're great, but anyway, I agree.  My comments from #2 apply here
as well.  I want  but I also respect that TLC is doing what it thinks is
going to sell.  Personally I want to see the generic space come back.  Star
Wars is cool and all, but classic space is cool too!  Gah, well space does
has it's slice of the pie I suppose.
I miss the service packs too.

and 5.Lego should make more technic sets like the 8430 crane, the blue
motorbike and so on (either reissues or even better, new designs). Stuff

accessory packs containing the most commonly used technic parts (gears,

Agreed, technic good!  (particuarily technic using technic brick beams and
not lift arms)  We got some coming this year, did you notice?

As I think that Lego has at least turned the corner in getting back to their
roots with the 2003 lineup, I only have three things I think would be
perfect.

Re-release the 3033 bulk tub in the same exact configuration as the
original.  The 4107 Creator tub is nice with the newer color selection and
all, but the lack of any quantity of the larger brick sizes stinks.

Release the 3044 bulk tub in the same brick counts as the 3033 but in colors
light grey, dark grey, tan, black, dark blue, and dark red.  As these colors
are so common in the newer sets these days, availability of them should be
no problem.  :)

I have been overall happy with the newer offerings in the Creator line of
bulk tubs, but they are still pale in comparison to the classic 3033.

Lastly, a line of bulk tubs identical to the 3033 concept but in plates
instead.  Same colors as the two ideas above would be great.

Is this something the AFOL can't do?

All AFOLs aren't created equal.  I'm an AFOL who's trying to keep to a
budget and manage my personal free time between my family and my bricks.  If
I have to buy three 10020s so I can build a proper B-unit (i.e. three gray
port holes per side like Brad Justus described at BricksWest 2002) it means
I probably can't afford some other set or sets in it's place.  If I'm going
to dedicate the time I don't share with my non-LEGO wife to my hobby I'd
rather spend it building than surfing around through Bricklink shops trying
to find the right pieces to do it without having to buy three 10020s and/or
spend a fortune.  Either way, if LEGO offered a kit I'd buy it in an
instant.  While many of the brilliant, creative, and inspiring AFOLs who
post to LUGNET are the type who buy ten copies of every set in a theme and
have 800,000 pieces in their Bricklink shops, some of us mere mortal AFOLs
don't have the luxury of being able to real-build any MOC we can conceive.
Believe me I've browsed Jake's BI portal (and James Mathis's brickshelf
pages!) many times and found tons of MOCs I'd love to build but despite my
significant collection of sets (typically only one of each) I doubt I have
the right pieces to build most of those MOCs I desire.  I've done the
exercise using Peeron and an LDraw parts list only to be repeatedly
frustrated that I just don't have the right number or color of key elements
that define the MOC.  It's a painstaking process and once again it's time
away from my family that if I'm going to dedicate to LEGO, I'd rather be
building.  Maybe I'm in the minority among AFOLs but if LEGO Direct is going
to consider the AFOL demographic when deciding a product (assuming they do
at all) I want it to be known that we don't all have the same resources.

Regards,
Paul

PS: I'm not trying to start a big B-unit debate again.  Obviously, I agree
that if LEGO Direct has to *choose* between a B-unit accessory pack or a
brand new trains-themed set I'd also choose the new trains-themed set.  But
if they don't have to choose then I think the demand will be there among
others like me.

I just wish it was available also in white, tan, gray, dk.gray & brown. As
it is they've kept offering similar sets in red and blue. Ick.

Came with 6x8 plates, 4x12's, 4x8's, 4x6's, 4x4's, and all varieties of 2xN

Yeeeowch.  Ok, sore spot, got it.  This is why I asked.  (I don't build many
trains you see...)  But really do you think you're a majority or a minority
of the LEGO buyer?  If you really must have one of these models it is still
a possibility.

But as for the rest of it, I do believe that LEGO is considering its fans,
and paying attention.  My god, just look at the product line, while they
aren't making everyone happy they are closer to the mark than ever before.

In fact I'd say pay attention to what is about to come from LEGO Direct.  My
guess is that LEGO is about to get more involved.

Oops, sorry for venting there.  I guess I didn't realize I had such a sore
spot there myself.  I'm just sometimes frustrated by the really cool things
other AFOLs demonstrate is possible but I can't achieve for time/money reasons.

But really do you think you're a majority or a minority
of the LEGO buyer?
Don't know.  I'd suspect most kids don't care if they have the exact correct
pieces and colors to create a perfect prototypical MOC and maybe most AFOLs
have the time and capital to build whatever they want, so perhaps I am in
the minority of buyers.

If you really must have one of these models it is still
a possibility.
I know it could be done and I probably will do it if the accessory pack
never materializes.  But if LD makes it easy for me then I have more time
and money to spend on something else.  I understand they need to see demand.

But as for the rest of it, I do believe that LEGO is considering its fans,

The only problem with that is all I want/need are lots of just one size.
Preferably 6x8 but something similar (4x10, 8x8, etc.) would suffice.  These
sizes are large enough to cover a decent amount of space, yet small enough to
be highly versatile.  I don't really want all the extra small plates and added
cost I would get from a few thousand 5217s just for the 6x8s.  Anyway currently
Lego Direct offers packs of 1xNs or 2xNs.  Well what about the 6x8s?  I really
don't even care what color they are at this point. I would prefer grey or black
but I would even take pink at this point. I have been wanting these for about
10 years but it wasn't untill LD came along that I thought it might actually
happen. 6x8s has been the only "bulk pack" I have really been wanting since
they announced they would be making them. I would get a bunch of fence packs
and clear 1x2s but without the plates to utilize them, what is the point?

you know, if it makes you feel any better, pretty much every instruction i've
made was a much cleaned up version of my original MOC.  while i can't speak for
every model up on the instruction portal, at least some of us that make
instructions can't build them perfectly IRL either.

Tangentially, I agree, the process of evaluating whether you have parts to
build a MOC and gaining the knowledge of who has what parts for sale to
complete it is indeed tedious.

However... watch for an upcoming release of BrikTrak... it will automate
much of this function, or so it is promised... you input your .mpd or .ldr
and it generates a list of what shops have how much of the parts you need so
you can make buying decisions with less time invested.

This does not dilute the point you're making but I did want to mention it.

Not to start a debate (ok, maybe a little one), but isn't that the eternal
"LEGO Question"? I mean I can imagine my collection growing to be hundreds
of millions of pieces and still always looking for something I needed. After
all, as the community grows there are more and more ideas, projects get
bigger and bigger and designs require more and more parts.

So I guess it comes down to that big question...can Steve B. ever really get
enough lime green?

Here's to the overwhelming "lurking" majority with limited resources!
Thank you Paul for your postings. I wholeheartedly understand your ranting
and raving. Thank you Manfred for pointing out those of us who are "lurking"
but who do want to spend some of our discretionary income on LEGO's. AFOL's
do support LD.  We just want some economic sensibility in LD's offerings.
The more the better, and the better offerings from LD, the less we spend on
aftermarket resources.  What would we do afterall without the excellent
aftermarket resources that are available?

So I guess it comes down to that big question...can Steve B. ever really • get
enough lime green?

Based on the conversation I had with Steve the other day I would say the
answer to that question is "no".  ;-)

Hi Jake,

No need for debate since I agree.  Of course you're right.  I was just
venting.  My original intention for that post was just to make sure LEGO
Direct didn't think all AFOLs had the same resources.  In retrospect I'm
sure LEGO Direct knew that already.  I ended up venting about not having
resources myself, but I know that to some extent that's always going to be
the nature of the hobby.  For the folks who have more money or time, they
can do more, but I understand they too feel limited from time to time.  As
we all know, that just goes to show the amazing versatility of The Brick.
The possibilities are unlimited, no matter how many you have.

As I've said before in other posts, I think LEGO Direct is doing great
things.  As an AFOL with limited MOC-building resources, the detailed and
advanced sets you offer are really the only way I get the thrill of really
seeing the brick show its great potential on that scale.  I know TLC can't
drive the company based on our AFOL demographic alone but it still might be
nice for you guys to know that the decisions you've been making have helped
to form one happy and loyal customer who'll keep coming back for more! (Even
if you never do produce that B-Unit pack ;-)

Regards,
Paul

SFSC first came out.

Is this something the AFOL can't do?

Hope nobody minds me hijacking the thread...
After some serious planning I decided to release a special Santa Fe B-unit,
available from my Bricklink shop Brick Piles. It's designed to fit perfectly
together with LEGO's A-unit.

More details can be found on my own LEGO Santa Fe F7B page, at

Preferably 6x8 but something similar (4x10, 8x8, etc.) would suffice.

Currently many sets include the new 8 x 8 plate in various colors including
Black, Dark Gray, Tan and a few other colors.

You can find many thousand for sale on BrickLink.

I will admit, though, that I find this size a bit awkward to use as I am
accustomed to 6x plates, but when making double layers of plates, they work
well in concert with 6x plates.  Now we just have to wait for Lego to produce
the 8 x 10 and 8 x 12 plate.

1.Lego should

... sort its S@H inventory out so that items listed as "in stock" actaully are
"in stock"

Twice I've had items "backorder cancelled". I'm informed there is a lack of
synchronisation between online and telephone ordering.
