Batman.
Jake has confirmed
it - yet another license, starting in 2006.
PS - Why isnt there a year.2006 newsgroup?

The first obvious thing to say is I thought LEGO was done with licenses...
But aside from that, many questions come to mind.
First, Megabloks already has (or had) the Batman license...
So is this a different license than Megabloks? Like for the Batman prequel
movie or similar? Does both LEGO and Megabloks now have a Batman License?
Was DC comics upset with the way Megabloks ran the Batman License and sold it
out from under them?
Or was Megabloks simply bored or tired of the license and did not renew?
Megabloks now has a Spiderman license, complete with Doc Ock and I think the
Green Goblin... did LEGO lose that license?
Makes me almost think the two companies just switched licenses....

Actaully, it was Art Asylum and Play Along Toys that had the Batman licence with
thier C3 and Mini-Mates line. Appauling construction sets, but cool figures.
They obviously dont have the licence any more!

The MegaBloks stuff looks like its all based on comic designs, not the movies.
Even their Fantastic Four stuff is comic based, not movie based. LEGO
Spider-Man is for the two movies. But will they do more sets when the third
movie comes out?

Sometimes it seems like Designer is the LEGO license, and turning out movie
and TV-based toys is what TLC actually does. Even the TLC-created stories
(Bionicle, KK, Dino Attack) just seem like tie-ins in search of a cartoon.
I know that there are seperate movie and comic (and presumably TV) licenses, but
I cant keep track of who has what. Theres also this
clone product, by Art Asylum.

See? Just shows to go ya just how much I pay attention at clone brands :)
Thanks for setting me straight.

Ug! Maybe Im paying TOO MUCH attention to the clones! Im ashamed of myself!
But I do admit, I do like and collect the Mini-Mate figures, and while theyve
done Marvel characters just as figures, DC characters only came with those
dereadful C3 sets... I pretty much kept the figures and threw out the blocks
with those sets!

Greg, as a long time batman fan, I must admit that Ive often been tempted to
purchase one of those C3 sets, especially since Ive seen them time and time
again discounted almost to nothing. As cool as the figs did appear, I always
opted against buying these toys in favor of spending my limited budget on actual
Lego product. The major problem that I find with most clones is the limited
compatability with actual Lego product, i.e. mega blok plates that are 1/2 a
brick high, instead of 1/3 high like thier lego counterparts.
I suspect that the people at Warner (DCs parent company, f.y.i. Marvels parent
company is New Line) decided that the lesser brands of construction toys were
not successful in exploiting the market potential that has come to be expected
by the batman franchise.
I look forward to the line, lets hope that the batmobile is a cool model.

For some reason, he chose not to enable commenting on his entry...
I wonder wether they managed to get violet "right" this time - as an
excuse for the Knight Bus Desaster they told us that violet was tricky -
to tricky obviously to get a set in a uniform colour.
Or will they take the easy road, and do a dull, black, batman instead?
On the other hand, maybe we are lucky and will get a few more of these
great-looking dark blue parts with these sets.
Lets see what the future holds in store, err, in the cave...

Um... Ive always seen Batmans
costume as a mix of black and dark grey. Violet would be more of a pansy
Batman, no?

The license covers TV (The Batman), movies (Batman Begins and any other movies
coming out while TLC holds the rights) and comics. Six sets due in April 2006.

Weeeell, which colour does Batman have, then? I'd say, it depends on
what that particular Batman is based, either the comics, the movies, the
TV series the animated TV series...
OK, he is not as violet as "Phantom" (IIRC), but a hint of it besides
some black and dark blue would be possible.
Personally, I'd prefer the dark blue any day, as it is a very nice
colour (I'd _love_ to have a complete set of slope bricks available in
this colour, as it would make nice slated roofs, i think).

Wow. My opinion is 180° from yours. I hate the Mini-Mates figures from head to
toe, but I was generally satisfied with the design of the sets (though they
werent a good dollar value, which is part of why they tanked, IMO).

Thats incorrect, Im afraid. The box for the very nice Baxter Building Lab set
features graphics from the film as well as the 20th Century Fox logo.
Perhaps the license deal extends to that film company, but not to Sony?

That, I dont know. Mega Bloks has already revealed some of its product line
for 2006, including sets with the Green Goblin (better than LEGOs version),
Veom, and Carnage, but these are comic-based rather than film-based.

For the record, youre probably thinking of Tyco, because the vast majority of
Mega Bloks bricks are 1/3 brick-height. There have been a few half-brick-height
plate over time (such as the 8x24, the 8x16, the 4x16, etc.) but Mega Bloks has
never had a 2x4 plate half the height of a brick.
C3, the brand name under which the DC-themed sets have been marketed, likewise
adhere to the 1:3 plate:brick height ratio.

Batmans a property of DC Comics, so presumably a Marvel license would be
irrelevant (except in terms of not wanting to associate too closely with ones
comic-competitor).
Marvel is at least happy enough with Mega Bloks treatment of the line that
additional sets are due out for the 2006 product year.
Dave!
