Ships needed for Brickfest pirate game!

I haven't gotten as far on building stuff as I wanted, and we've got a
couple local gatherings going on (Martin Legault is down here in Raleigh
NC this week).

We could especially use some smaller ships, I have built the 4 copies of
the cutter from 6277 that I have (yea - I have 3 copies of 6277 plus got
a mixed lot which happened to have a 4th complete cutter). I will try
and build some cutters tonight, and maybe also a brig or two or three
(10 wide ship). I'll also try and retrofit some of my existing ships
with the right number of cannon.

I also didn't get around to building my pirate base, so if someone wants
a try at something like that, that would be neat (though we can always
use 6273 which I do have built).

I have a 6276 and a 6277 built up to provide a couple imperial type
instalations.

I'll probably bring a fair bit of my parts so I can build like mad on
Friday (if I get rolling pretty quick, I may make it up by 2:00 PM).

Anyone who doesn't have much in the way of pirate bits, and will be
there early on Friday is welcome to come play with my parts!

One more thing - if you're planning on playing, if you could bring a
clipboard, that would make it a little easier for you to keep track of
your ship papers. I'll be making a bunch of copies of the ship record
sheets and will bring sheet protectors and overhead pens for marking
damage etc.

Well, I've got a lot on my building agenda for this week, but luckily, Pirate
ships are on there!  I have 8-9 standard hulls that I can build on, plus a
*ton* of bow bricks I can use.  I'll see what I can throw together.  :)
However, One thing I'm lacking is sails.  Are all ships required to be
outfitted with sails?  I may be able to get my mother to make some based on the
CC and BSB sails...

...I was just going to 'cheat' and use paper. Simple, effective, and gets the job done :-)
(and easier to poke holes in to simulate battle damage!)

...oooh! now there's an idea! have all ships use paper sails so we can use sharp pencils
to poke holes in them when they get hit :-)

I don't see that we absolutely need to have sails, however, I'll be
bringing my box of sails, so if you make your ship sail ready, we can
use some of my sails for the game (I've got a bunch of extra sails from
6057, 6256, 6261, 6262, 6267, 6268, 6271, 6273, 6274, 6278, 6280, 6281,
6285, 6289, 6296, and maybe even 6250, 6286 - what I don't have extras
of the 6277 cutter sails, I also have a couple other things I'll be
playing with for sails, 5846 and 6098).

Cannon is another thing people need not worry about. I have something
like 50 shooting cannon service packs (what can I say, back when I was
looking for people to swap 6716 parts with, I got an offer to get cannon
service packs from Italy, cost to me was about $5.25 per pack of two
cannon), plus a bag of about 20-30 cannon.

I'd leave the 6289 at 2 center sections. 6289 is the only stock ship
with 2 center sections.

I need to figure out how many cannon I actually need. I may actually have
extra cannon.

If we go for the campaign game, people start with a class 1 ship. I'm also
thinking that given that really none of us have experience with the system,
it would be better to stick with smaller ships even if we do just the
straight battle game. I would also note that even Steve Jackson doesn't
actually have any class 8 ships (or any class 5 either).

...I may have to leave it at 2 just cuz of time (tho I may have time to • make a 1 center

That would be good.

For the most part, bases should look cool. It would be good if they have space
for some (or many) cannon. I haven't decided how many cannon bases should
have, but they should have enough to require a pretty good sized fleet to
assualt them.

I would concentrate most on something that looks nice though. Bases are where
people will retreat to for resupply and to sell loot. They provide a role
playing opportunity, so bases which show some character will be more evocative
for role playing opportunities.

Note: In the Saturday game, I will be awarding some bonuses to those who
provide something neat for the game (and don't forget to show up in some kind
of costume if possible - if nothing else, stop at a toy store and buy some
kiddie pirate props - a definite bonus to someone who can supply me with an
awsome hat [I do have some kiddie pirate props, but if someone has access to a
costume store or just has a bunch of stuff about the house, that would be
really cool, I'm affraid I haven't had time to do a bang up job], note also
that a bandana can be turned easily into a pirate head wrap).

Well, I don't want to find myself down too many points, but I have no Pirate
gear to wear.  I can, however, say "Arrrr" annoyingly often.  What's the
diferential in setup points for finding the getup?  ;)

As for that Long John Silver's, is there one in the area?  I'm partial to
"Pizza de Resistance" myself, at least in the "goofy names" category.

And if it's any use, I know lots of silly "Arrrr" jokes. After their show, our
Improv club went crazy with these and made up multitudes of 'em. Arrrgh! ;-)

It mostly just means a special for your captain or some such. Note that
bonuses will also be awarded to those who help set up or supply ships or
islands. You can also just stop in a toy store on your way down and pick up a
pirate prop...

Yesterday and today I did some ship building. I built four cutters (including
one based on a 4 wide hull) and another class 2 regular ship (which has a pink
striped sail, and uses the bow detail from the Flying Time Vessel).

costume store or just has a bunch of stuff about the house, that would be
really cool, I'm affraid I haven't had time to do a bang up job], note also
that a bandana can be turned easily into a pirate head wrap).

...I think a trip to a local Long John Silvers would be in order too (and the • paper kids
hats are fun :-)

Well, I don't want to find myself down too many points, but I have no Pirate
gear to wear.  I can, however, say "Arrrr" annoyingly often.  What's the
diferential in setup points for finding the getup?  ;)

It mostly just means a special for your captain or some such. Note that
bonuses will also be awarded to those who help set up or supply ships or
islands. You can also just stop in a toy store on your way down and pick up a
pirate prop...

...I started a ship last nite and while thinking, ended up making a small 'pirate outpost'
island place compleat with a little prison :-)

Yesterday and today I did some ship building. I built four cutters (including
one based on a 4 wide hull) and another class 2 regular ship (which has a pink
striped sail, and uses the bow detail from the Flying Time Vessel).

...I'm working on a 2 deck 16w with 1 center section ship. Its got 2 cannon at the moment,
but I'm planning on seeing if the store has a cheap supply of cannon in any WW sets tonite

Yea, I'll be bringing stuff to build islands on the spot (we may also be
able to raid the building room...). If you want to bring stuff to build
with, please do, but we won's absolutely need it (I can pack a BUNCH of
island building stuff into a box).

   Frank et al,

My move is now complete, except for the "unpacking" phase,
which I currently dread.  As one might expect I am now in
the "I own too much LEGO" phase as I nurse my aching back.
However, _Gloire_ survived the move without even so much
as a broken spar (I made a special trip where she had a
quarter of the moving van's bed to herself), and I'm starting
to set up shop in my new place--the workshop has taken over
half of the apartment, which was expected; my boxed sets
   now occupy a storage unit.

In lugnet.fun.gaming, Frank Filz writes:
I haven't gotten as far on building stuff as I wanted, and we've got a
couple local gatherings going on (Martin Legault is down here in Raleigh
NC this week).

We could especially use some smaller ships, I have built the 4 copies of
the cutter from 6277 that I have (yea - I have 3 copies of 6277 plus got
a mixed lot which happened to have a 4th complete cutter). I will try
and build some cutters tonight, and maybe also a brig or two or three
(10 wide ship). I'll also try and retrofit some of my existing ships
with the right number of cannon.

I have four copies of 6280, and two 6271 hulls; if you
wish I can take apart my ironclad and rebuild some small
   12-wide 1- or 2-midsection ships.

I also didn't get around to building my pirate base, so if someone wants
a try at something like that, that would be neat (though we can always
use 6273 which I do have built).

I have a 6276 and a 6277 built up to provide a couple imperial type
instalations.

Although I have those three 6277/6 baseplates, I have no
installations yet; should I bring the plates anyhow?  (I'm
not averse to (shudder) taping my name underneath them.  I
may also have my mother pin my mittens to my coat...er, not
really.)  I was considering building some kind of island or
small unfortified port-of-call, but because I've just moved
I'm not entirely sure if I'll have the time.

Given that I have a minimum of time, Frank, how would you
like me to prioritise my construction?

I'll probably bring a fair bit of my parts so I can build like mad on
Friday (if I get rolling pretty quick, I may make it up by 2:00 PM).

I'm going to be there around 4 or 5pm, I hope.  I will have
to leave for a short time on Saturday to go pick up my NLSO
(who is coming in from Boston by air and will be museuming
while I'm blowing people's ships to bits).

By the way, any Brickfesters have extra black ratlines (from
5988) that I might obtain in trade there?  I'm desperate for
some to replace those anemic threads on _Gloire_.

   best

Nah, don't do that (but do bring it for the display, will you be able to bring
the Gloire?). I'll probably bring some stuff and we can slap some ships
together at the last minute if necessary. I've got some unopened 6280s (plus I
started into an attempted mod on one) and I've got tons of stuff to build
6268s.

My fleet which is in mostly useable right now includes:

4 6277 cutters
3 cutters on the same lines as 6277
1 4 wide cutter
3 6268
1 6250
1 Green Menace
1 class 2 using 6493 hull and bow detail
2 6280
3 6271
3 6274
1 6289
1 6285
1 Red Seas Barracuda (red/dk grey/white modified BSB)
1 6286

I've also got a 2nd 6285 which is sort of in shambles. I'll probably make a
few more cutters (they go together pretty quick once you've built a couple - I
don't even need to look at the instructions really any more).

If you find the time, and have the parts you might build a cutter or two, or
if you want to do something more major, play around with a port or island (it
would be nice to have a couple interesting islands also).

I'll probably bring a fair bit of my parts so I can build like mad on

What time does she fly in? If it's near lunch, we can break for lunch then or
something.

5988) that I might obtain in trade there?  I'm desperate for

How many do you need? I could bring some.

I just packed this morning for a local gathering and realized how much
space its going to take to pack all these ships. I'd love to get a list
of exactly what people hope to bring ship and island wise, so I can see
what to leave out.

I can already see that it's going to take some time Friday night to put
ships back to rights. Masts and spars and various little bits are going
to dissasemble themselves. I'll have a better idea tonight how much
dissasembly will occur.

I built a 10 wide brig last night. It came out pretty good. I may have
some pictures up tonight or tomorrow night.

Well, I probably could get all of that in, if I tried. I do currently
have 6285, RSB, 6250, GM, 5 cutters, and 1 brig, plus a bunch of Dino
Island, plus my Blacktron stuff, plus a few train MOCs plus Jambalaya
Junk Box #3, plus my box of Belville stuff in the car right now and it
isn't full. I've been thinking of upgrading my rental to a larger car
though (my car is near death so I don't want to trust it to the drive,
plus the AC is on the fritz), possibly even a minivan.

I'll probably end up dismasting a lot of the ships as they take up less
than half the space with the masts collapsed. My big problem this
morning was that the BSB and RSB are too long for most of the boxes I
have.

Frank:
I'm bringing Fort El Lego on a 32x32 and a 32x16. 4 cannon (could be 5) a jail, a
barracks, docks, and a tall observation tower.

Plus:
The Wraith, a class 6 Pirate ship.

I could probably fit a few more bits in the box that I'm packing.
Maybe the UPS Enfield, a Class 2 manned by United Plates Marines?
I also have a cutter from 6277.

I've got no ships to bring.  I've been toying with what to throw together.  I
was building a base, but my son started 'helping' and it turned into a green

some kind?

Probably an island. I should be able to fit both 6276 and 6277 into my
stuff. Of course I'll also throw in a pile of stuff to make islands. I'd
say though, go where your creativity takes you.

Probably an island. I should be able to fit both 6276 and 6277 into my
stuff. Of course I'll also throw in a pile of stuff to make islands. I'd
say though, go where your creativity takes you.

OK, well, it turns out that building an island of the size that I was trying
with the degree of sculptural detail that I was trying takes WAY too long.
I've shot several hours on crap :-)

I'll just bring a small island that I threw together.  And I can build on site
too!

So, I guess I'll see y'all tomorrow.  I see my son off at school at 8:30 AM and
then I'm on the road.  I think I'll arrive around 12:30.

I have four copies of 6280, and two 6271 hulls; if you

Nah, don't do that (but do bring it for the display, will you be able to bring
the Gloire?). I'll probably bring some stuff and we can slap some ships
together at the last minute if necessary. I've got some unopened 6280s (plus I
started into an attempted mod on one) and I've got tons of stuff to build
6268s.

Okay.  I'm still probably going to take the little ironclad
apart--it has just too many useful pieces!  :)  I think I may
rebuild it into a useful ship.

I'll have to work out how to spend the space in my backseat
   to get everything there!

Given that I have a minimum of time, Frank, how would you
like me to prioritise my construction?

If you find the time, and have the parts you might build a cutter or two, or
if you want to do something more major, play around with a port or island (it
would be nice to have a couple interesting islands also).

OK--islands it is!  (Islands they be?)

What time does she fly in? If it's near lunch, we can break for lunch then or
something.

   I don't know.  I don't have a phone, I haven't been able
   to call her.

By the way, any Brickfesters have extra black ratlines (from
5988) that I might obtain in trade there?  I'm desperate for
some to replace those anemic threads on _Gloire_.

How many do you need? I could bring some.

Well, I'm looking for a dozen or so all told.  (_Gloire_ only
needs six, but I use them a lot on other ships.) Also if anyone
has a few of the REALLY LONG brown ratlines, I'd be interested
in trading for those.  Just let me know what you want in return.

   best

   Lindsay
