Space! at BrickFest 2005
Dan Rubin and Lenny Hoffman are the Space theme coordinators. Jon Palmer is
helping with planning for the Moonbase, and Jeff Stembel is handling all things
Mecha.
First off, we have the 3rd floor lobby for the Moonbase, as well as many of the rooms we had last year. We are going to make
the Moonbase thinner and longer, so that
modules arent buried on the inside, also this will give us a chance to do some
interesting creative details. This also means we will need more
endcaps.
Id like to urge everyone bringing a creation to BrickFest to fill in their
MOC-cards - this will allow us to better
plan the Moonbase. When entering Moonbases, please put Moonbase as the first
word in the Title (eg. Moonbase: Krispy Kreme) and then, under the
description, add the primary and secondary colors of your Moonbase module (eg.
Description: Grey/Red an Eastern Block Gulag
).
There is also going to be a really cool Asteroid Field Display. It will feature
asteroids being utilized in a variety of ways, from mining operations to
monasteries, as well as spaceships moving through the asteroid field. Dan has
begun the great Asteroid Contest a
winner will be picked online and a winner will be picked at BrickFest.
To encourage building, we have expanded the number of awards we are going to
give out. Some will be judged and some will be voted for.
Judged Awards:
- Best Asteroid
- Most Humorous Creation
- Best Detail and/or Greeble
Voted Awards:
- Small Space 1st, 2nd
- Medium Space 1st, 2nd
- Large Space 1st, 2nd
- Best Moonbase Endcap
- Small Moonbase 1st, 2nd
- Large moonbase 1st, 2nd
Like last year, 1st place awards will be given a Space Vignette Trophy built by
some of the best builders in Space! 2nd place winners will be given a special
smaller trophy yet to be designed, plus all the fame and glory that goes with
being not-quite-the-best.
Of course, as we come up with newer and more exciting plans, well keep you in
the know! I bet this will be the mostest fun BrickFest ever!!

With the moonbase longer and thinner, spread out in the lobby, it should look
really great. A suggestion though, to help avoid the crowding of last year,
why not add more blank plates, and more simple corridors. Generally (but not
always) when somebody builds on a single 48x48 baseplate, they tend to build
upwards very quickly. This can block out the modules that are behind one
another. By adding in blank baseplates and simple regular height (about 18 brick
or so) corridor modules everything gets spread out, and less crowding ensues.
Perhaps if you bring a module, also try to bring one of the following: an extra
blank baseplate, a simple corridor module, or an end cap or two. (make sure to
write your name on the back of the blank baselate with a sharpie marker). I know
simple corridor modules arent as fun to build or show off the full extent of
ones creative abilities, but spreading out the whole display will make everyones
modules look better. And the blank baseplates will provide more room for roaming
space vehicles.
Thoughts?
Adam.

Along with the thinness, we are also going to arrange modules so that tall ones
are behind the short ones. The display is going to be ~3 modules wide, so it
would work like Tall-Medium-Short. This should give equal viewing access to all
of the modules.
Also, SciBrick has extra 48x48 baseplates that will be at BrickFest to help, to
help people who dont have baseplates of their own (they are kinda expensive)
and to fill in gaps where needed.

I, if I have the time, am going to be building basic connection corridors. I
dont have the space for a full-on module, so I figure this will help out as
best as possible.
An idea I have is to build a shipyard for fighters and shuttles to land. It
would be a plain baseplate with tiles and lights on it, and I would provide
refueling and maintainence crews. I think this will add to the life of the
moonbase and make for a more interesting/dynamic display. It will also give
some blank space between modules that you are describing.
Thanks for the ideas!

Thanks for the response. Just to be devils advocate, what if another BlackTron
Intelligence Agency super module comes along? It was about 4x4 baseplates I
think... (I only wish I had that many bricks...) Im sure somebody out there
right now is thinking Hmmm I could build a moonbase that is 5x5 baseplates
big...
Adam.

Actually, from this picture it looks like it was 2x2. 4x4 is pretty darn huge - that would be 60
inches x 60 inches - or 5ft by 5ft. That would be great.
If something that big just happens to show up at fest, Dan and I will make
whatever changes necessary to make room for it. It is best to let us know
before hand if something that big is coming, so that we can make special
arrangements. But I dont see it as a fatal problem to our current plan. Part
of the Moonbase will be wider than the rest.

Translation: Fill out the MOC Card form! Thats how the coordinators know whats
coming and how they can plan. Big OR small, every creation that shows up should
have a MOC card in the system... it really really really helps a lot.

Yes, Larry understands me well. And actually, there is a bit of information
about HOW to fill out your MOC card for Moonbase modules in the original
announcements that would also help out.
MOC Cards are AWESOME!!!

Hi Lenny,
I'm trying to get my schedule switched around so I can come to BrickFest
again this year. If I can make it, I'd like to bring my newest BIA. This is
the last time it was displayed in February, however it's grown a lil' since
then
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1115415
It is stand alone or can be hooked up to the moonbase. It covers 4 x 6
baseplate area (24 large grey baseplates). The monorail runs in and through
extending out to other moonbase modules. I've got lots more monorail track
if anyone wants to hook modules up throughout the moonbase.
Would there be room to set the BIA up this year?
Thanks in advance,
Brian Darrow

Haha, Brian! You called me on my bluff!
But really, there will be more than enough room. Make sure you make a MOC Card
for the BIA, and I'll make sure I have some extra width for it!

Hey Lenny,
Thats a great idea. Interspersing some parking lot spaces between the
modules also makes it possible for a lot of people who cant bring full modules
to participate in the layout by adding their small ships.

Exactly my idea Bruce. Also, people can contribute by bringing maintainence
crews, etc. Id love to see a bunch of little maintainence rovers and whatnot.
Stuff like that would be in the running for Best Detail - we want to see small
stuff that makes us go wow!
-Lenny
PS. I should add that Best Detail could also be a really cool detail on
something larger - but it is the detail itself that will be judged, not the
large MOC that it comes on.

So, for those people who dont make it this year, will it will be all downhill
starting in 2006? :P

Hey, Jude, don't make it bad
Take the mostest fun BrickFest ever and make it better

Bram made this suggestion back in 2004.
And there seems to be plenty of OLG 16x16 baseplates on
Bricklink.
Hope that helps - for some reason that post stuck out in my memory.
