Hello all, in support of a new display we’re going to try and get going at Brickfest this year, I am announcing a contest. The object? To build asteroid based MOCs!

There will be two categories in this contest, small asteroid and large asteroid. The other judges and I will try and define these categories based on the type of entries submitted.

The only restriction is that the actual asteroid parts should be reasonable asteroid colors, so that they can all be put into one layout display. Example colors are tan, light gray, dark gray, and brown, but if you can make something else work (like a gray asteroid half mined away to show trans neon green or something), go for it.

Feel free to post your entries online wherever you like, just make sure that you also email entries to me at happyweasel at gmail.com with “asteroid contest entry” a part of the subject line.

I’m going to give alot of time for this, as I know alot of folks are in school of some sort, and wouldn’t mind waiting for classes to end. So the deadline will be on July 15th.

Prizes? I’m sure I can come up with something, but I don’t have anything specific in mind yet, the prizes will change relative to the number and quality of entries.

Now, example ideas:
  • large scale mine

  • small asteroids with small mines or miners on them
  • the home of Le Petit Prince

  • pirate or smuggling bases

  • transmission relays

  • research labs

  • colonial outposts

  • space rockin disco

  • some of you may recall that I built a monastery
Your imaginations are the limit!

-Daniel Rubin (Brickfest 2005 Space Co-coordinator)

(...) If we make an astroid with a place on top to suspend it by fishing line, will there be a way to hang them there at GMU? (provided we can bring our own string) (19 years ago, 27-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) What's wrong with you Rubin? I'm going to pretend you didn't really suggest this one. Great contest idea though, and I think it would make for a great group display and a better setting for ships at a con. -Keith (19 years ago, 28-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) If the ultimate goal is a shared display are we assuming minifig scale? Or are microfig (and other) scale asteroids welcome in the contest as well? Cheers Tim (19 years ago, 28-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)

(...) Dammit, you're going to make me try this one, aren't you? :P Jeff (19 years ago, 28-Apr-05, to lugnet.space, FTX)
