I decided to make a fighter for every unused letter in the alphabet.  A
total of 18 fighters.  In addition to the 4 fighters (x,y,a,b) in the
movies, I'm not going to build e,k,t or v.  These appear here and there
throughout the SW books, comics and games.  I might even be missing another
letter.

I've finished the first 4.

http://www.oklahoma.net/~jpalmer/lego/alpha.html

I'm trying to make many of these look like the letter but a few of them
(like the b-wing) won't look like their letter at all.  I've been trying to
build them to scale with the Star Wars Lego sets.

I should have the next batch done in about a week.

Tell me what you think!

Jon... This is such an awesome idea!

Woah! All the ships have unique and cool designs and features too! The
F-wing... Wow, the G-wing... stunning..., D-wing... yummy seat! I can go on,
but you get the picture! ;-D

And there's still 14 fighters to go!!! Yay!

That's a great concept!  I like what you've done so far quite a bit.  The
D-wing has a pretty innovative shape (and is that light blue highlights on
it?).  I love the greeblie sections on the F-wing, especially that cutout
notch on the nose of the craft, and the G-wing has an awesome shape.
Where'd that canopy come from?

Thanks Adrian.  That is light blue (or medium blue) on the D-wing.  The
parts came from a few copies of 4579 and one 7310.

That cutout notch is mostly there because I couldn't find a 6th curvy slope
2 x4 thingy.  (Not the real name of this part ;-)  So I decided to make the
most of it.

The Canopy is the egg-shell from a Duplo egg.  At last.  I have my Duplo
eggs.  Let the weirdness begin.

That's a really ambitious project, but you seem eminently up for it.  I love
the idea of the C-wing hanging like a bat and dropping into flight from a rack.
And I see you've already made good use of your Duplo eggs!  Very cool ships.

Seth.

I love the G-wing!  It's not especially Star-Warsish, IMO, but it's
still a great shape.  What do you mean, the canopy dissolves?  Do they
have to replace it every time the fighter goes out?
The entry mechanism and engines on the D wing are excellent too.  The
wing could use a little more length/depth perhaps to make it more
substantial.  Can't wait to see the rest!

Thanks Bram.
I can pretty much guarentee that with 18 ships a few of them might not look
StarWarsian.
I'll try my best though. :-)

Heres the deal with the canopy.  For a while I tried a wrap around hinge
mechanism but it just didn't look right.  To make up for this I figure the
canopy is either some sort of force field, a jelly like substance like we
see in the Gungan city in Phantom Menace, or maybe its some sort of nanotech
that can build a disassemble itself.

Thanks for the comments!

That makes plenty of sense.  Think about the River scene with the Gungan Sub
just when it arrives at the capital city.  The canopies on it simply
dissolve to allow the jedi and Jar Jar to get out.

And it does look a little like a star wars ship that already exists, the
Virago, although that never appeared in the movies.

Very nice, and very original.  You should have entered the ISCC SW category.

What on earth is the G-Wing canopy from?  I'd love to get that piece.

Hey there. I've been away from my comp.  I just got back from OKC.
Thanks Lindsay!  Your guess was actually correct about me using the eggs for
hydroponics but I had a few other ideas for them until then.  I've wanted to
use a duplo egg for a ship ever since I first saw them.

The interior does rotate.  At the base (inside) are 4 2x2 round bricks that
make the conversion from the Duplo studs to System studs.  On top of these
is a 4x4 black turntable.  The spinning works fairly well but its not
perfect.  This will probably not be the first time I use an egg for a ship
so the next time I'd like to improve the spinning mechanism.

<sigh>Jon,
the more i peruse your stuff the more i like it.

1) you always have interesting greeblies (bison)
2) you always have interesting functional moving bits (d/g-wing)
3) you always have unique ideas (space monk, alphabet, etc.)
4) you always have interesting shapes
5) you always have aesthetic lines and design elements

for example in this pic:
http://www.oklahoma.net/~jpalmer/lego/fwing4.html
the foreground piece has some nice striping on it (red?)

and most of all

6) you somehow manage to combine all these elements
into a synergistic moc.

You wholes are more than the sum of their parts :-D

WOW Jon!

Those fighters are truly great. I love the canopy on the G-fighter and
dissolving it makes pretty good sense (I tried a hinge on a Duplo egg and it
just didn't work). But the way the pilot gets into his D-fighter is truly
amazing. I had to really study the animation to get it, really cool!!!

*Very* cool idea!  :-)

Interesting cockpit idea
("http://www.oklahoma.net/~jpalmer/lego/dwing3.html").

I came up with a similar cockpit idea

but overall, I think yours is the far better model.

I *really* want to know where you found those

They're in Ice Ramp Racers, I've heard.  I was waiting for
those to go to 75% to buy one and see for myself if it was as useful as
everyone was saying, but by the time I got to Wal-Mart they were all gone.
I hope that *someone* does an inventory. . .

Jon,

It would be cool after you've completed them to have all of them in a
diorama like a rebel hangar or in an attack formation!

In lugnet.announce.moc, Jon Palmer writes:
I decided to make a fighter for every unused letter in the alphabet.  A
total of 18 fighters.  In addition to the 4 fighters (x,y,a,b) in the
movies, I'm not going to build e,k,t or v.  These appear here and there
throughout the SW books, comics and games.  I might even be missing another
letter.

I've finished the first 4.

I'm trying to make many of these look like the letter but a few of them
(like the b-wing) won't look like their letter at all.  I've been trying to
build them to scale with the Star Wars Lego sets.

I should have the next batch done in about a week.

Tell me what you think!
