| The history behind the term "spamcake" is a funny one, germinating from Tom
McDonald's hilariously creative spamblock warning sigs. Do a search for
"spamcake" in off-topic.fun sometime if you don't know what I'm talking about.
When Tom came out with his Spamcake Diner, I was in love. What a great idea,
paying homage to a great bit:-) Here is his official Spamcake Diner web site:
http://www.baylug.org/titan/spamcake/spamcakediner.htm
Luckily for me, I got the chance to meet Tom and see the original Spamcake Diner
for myself at the Kidvention last year. It occurred to me that it would be
really cool if every LTC had a version of the Spamcake Diner somewhere on its
layout, to sort of build club camaraderie. It would be a kind of like a Hard
Rock Cafe thing, only with an AFOL twist. Tom and I even talked about printing
up T-shirts with the Spamcake Diner logo and particular cities printed
underneath, a la the Hard Rock Cafe:
Spamcake Diner
San Francisco
Spamcake Diner
Twin Cities
Spamcake Diner
Your Town
Sooo, I copied his Diner from online pics, changing it here and there, but
keeping the basic look of the original. I have yet to detail the interior; I
think I will wait to get some really good shots of the inside from Tom. The dog
spins, and the roof is on a hinge, allowing easy access and interior viewing.
Here is my version:

What do y'all think about building a Spamcake Diner for *your* layout?

I think it's a great idea! Every layout that has room for it should have a
"restaurant row" with recognisable national (and regional) icons... It is a
real crowd pleaser when they recognise the various chains(1), it starts
conversations and is a good entry if a club member wants to talk to mundanes
(we have some shy members who can use good openings).
Mixing this touch of originality in will build cross club recognition and
camaraderie.
Do you have more than just the photos to go on or did you wing it?
Bravo.
FUT to trains.org :-)
1 - although actually having a horse corral with a horse walkway to the back
of the Taco Bell, like we did, may be a bit over the top... (and may be
considered disparagement)

LOL If *ever* there was a time when I expected a shameless plug from you Lar, it
would have been here-- nice show of restraint;-) (Larry has just introduced a
new Custom kit which precisely fits into this idea)....

Nope. Pretty much just winged it. But there is a rumor going around that Tom
is creating a .dat file of it....

I *live* to surprise you, John. :-) Er did you say show of restaurant, or
show of restraint?

Have you no shame? Wait, don't answer that. Your check is in the mail.
As folks know, I am under constraint, I can only sell 25 of these. If at the
end of the year my license runs for, I have not sold 25 yet, I would be
willing to put together some sort of discounted package for clubs, perhaps
consisting of just the instructions and stickers. It is premature to offer
that at this point as I have plenty of kits ready to go out the door to
buyers, but let's remember this come next August... if there is still interest.

I need to sit down and do it sometime soon for Raleigh... I'm in
possesion of the signature dog (and I have the requisite yellow
macaronis).

Yes, those do seem to be the hardest to come by when reconstructing the Diner--
along with the obligatory 1x1 light pink plates;^D

I believe the dog is available in one of the Duplo eggs. The LEGO LICs or
Outlet stores may have some of these still on the shelves.

As a matter of fact, that is exactly where I got mine (in an egg at LLC). I did
it with the idea of copying the Spamcake Diner-- that was back at the
Kidvention, summer of '00...
If anyone runs across any of these eggs, please go ahead and buy a bunch. I
think that they cost around $3 each-- I'd pay for a dozen just to have them in
hand for any LTC that would want one. Maybe I'll just have to give LLC a call
in the morn-- anyone have their number handy?

Risking bad form replying to my own post, I have found the set number to help
out anyone who is interested in trying to obtain one-- 2751:

Is LIC MOA out of them? You're close, that would be a good place to try if
you were there anyway.
I want one of these eggs if someone manages to score a bunch...

I wasn't aware whether they *ever* had any, but then again I don't get out there
too often. I will call out there first, and if necessary, LLC as well.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Put us in the "me too" group, if extra eggs are scored we have the other
pieces to make, and would love to add a, Spamcake Diner to the Midsouth LTC
layout.

The LIC Orlando has a small (NEW?) Duplo boxed set in stock that contains
'the dog'. I believe the set number is 14xx and has the dog, a Duplo fig,
and one or two other parts. The retail was only a few bucks...

I really like the idea, but I am afraid the local planning
authorities would complain loudly. The architectural advisor
of the city council discourages buildings that don't go well
with the existing buildings in the downtown area. Do the
Spamcake Diner franchise agreements allow opening Spamcake
Diners in existing, more discrete buildings?
"7-Eleven" claims that the conservative planning policy in
Bregnerod counters free market agreements[1], but
independent stores support the policy of the city council.
Jacob (not mayor in Bregnerod at the moment)
1) Their signs don't match the existing buildings in
Bregnerod (and I lack some of the pieces ;-).

| Nelug has it's own Spamcake that was built as part of a block of stores.
You can see it here. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=15655
these pictures were taken before John sent me the doggie for the roof.
There is also a 7-11,KFC,Starbucks, and a Dunkin Donuts on the display.
Larry is right, in that at the train shows, there is alot of recognition
from the people. I don't know how many times I heard "Look, a Dunkin Donuts!"
