In the future, if Lego doesn't come out with DCC or something like it in
their 2001 train line, I will be converting my motors over to DCC.  The
newest line of Digitrax decoders offers a unit that reads back the EMF from
the motor and adjusts to maintain speed.  In plain English, it increases and
decreases the power automatically to maintain a constant speed.  That ends
the need for multiple controllers.  The control center I looked at also
allows for multiple switchback loops and fixes the polarity reversing
problem automatically and without anybody even noticing.  I can't wait for
DCC!!!

As for the grade on 8 wide trains, I would highly suggest having a maximum
of 1 plate per track length.  I plan on using that for my mountain layout
when I make it. (after I get the first 10 city modules done)

In answer to Tom's question, one motor will pull harder than the other until
they all get onto the same electrical block.  As long as the difference in
speed setting isn't too great, it shouldn't cause a decoupling.

How will you handle engines/trains with multiple motors as they cross the
transition from one trackset to the other?

Not seeing anything yet, this might have already been covered.  But, • have you
guys addressed electrical inter-operablity between modules?

Well, any module that has electrical connections to the track will run • them
back to the controller area in the module.  From there, a controller • could be
removed and the wire just run to the other controller where multiple • layouts
are connected, so I don't think it will be much of a problem.  I would
personally like to see our layouts get to the size that these issues • become a
problem, but right now, I think it is fairly minimal.

The GMLTC is planning on having two speed regulators for each track • around our
layout.  We'll split the layout electrically, so we can have higher • power on
the uphill side, and lower power on the downhill side.  We really have • no idea
how our larger (8-wide) trains will handle the grades...

We're also planning on having some stuff that the kids can control, • either
with Mindstorms pushbutton controls, or maybe even a speed regulator on • the
outside of the layout somewhere...
