I looked at the first one. I need to do some digging but I seem to remember a
problem in using multiple units together. It's hazy to me, but it revolves
around gearing. I seem to recally that locos that are geared differently could
not be MUed together because of the speed difference at the same throttle
setting.

Ya, there are 2 "standard" gearing setups, one which maxes out at something
like 97 MPH and one at 112 MPH.  You cannot MU otherwise compatable equipment
that has the different gearings.

Also, note, you cannot MU things like SW1xxx's with say a SD9.  Same problem
that the SW's gearing is much different than that of even the SD9's.

Those gearings are the 'normal' ones, and are not all that hard to change (but
not something you do on every day either).  However, I am also fairly sure that
you could set up quite different gearings if you were going to be running heavy
loads all the time (to give switcher kinds of speeds...45MPH max).

Wheel slip is a *bad thing* if you have wheels with rubber tyres, which LEGO
uses. excess slip causes tyre heating and the rubber eventually perishes, or
deforms enough to come off.

I'm not sure I'd just dismiss this just yet. But I may just be paranoid.

I'd tend to suspect that it is not really a big problem.  Not positive though,
since I think that wheelslip is likey to wear out the tires...

(...) In 12V days there was a service pack available with extra rubber tires if your original ones (from the 12V motor) perished or were otherwise damaged. This service pack is now highly prized as it's been out of prod for 20ish years. I am 2000 (...) (24 years ago, 27-Mar-00, to lugnet.trains)
