I've had to build several mountains for my Tolkien project and have gone
back and forth on BURPs/LURPs. I wasn't thrilled with this cliff:

because it was basically just a Burp pile. On my next mountain I tried to
completely hide the BURPs (though they were the underlying skeleton):

You can see them peeking though in places, but I tried to cover them up.
Then in this more recent cliff:

the BURPs/LURPs are more visible again, though I did try to break up the
patterns. This peak was completely bricks:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=266345
but it was much smaller (about 20x30 at the base) (and only two sides are
built up--from the back you just see pillars) so it wasn't as ambitious.
Anyway, I'm still learning (and will get a lot of practice, given that all
of Frodo's trip into Mordor will be rocks and mountains and cliffs) but my
general conclusions are:
BURPs and LURPs can be good. They make it quick to build up large
structures and save relatively limited supplies of gray bricks for detail
work. However, too many of them, especially if they are evenly spaced,
leads to a look that is too patterned and unnatural looking.
