In the larger sense, LUGs and LTCs are basically the same-- AFOLs getting
together to share their passions for the Brick. But there are distinctions.
I don't see LUGs and LTCs as comparable-- LTCs are a specific type of LUG, as a
Mindstorms Group is, or a Robotics club. While LTCs may display other MOCs at
any given time that are unrelated to trains, the *focus* of the club is trains
and to building a train layout.
These distinctions can get blurred by LUGs who are given to displaying trains
now and then at shows, but not willing to focus completely on trains. I'm not
saying that there is anything wrong with that, just that there are some LUGs
that have train lovers in them (naturally:-) who have decided not to form their
own LTC that is distinct from the LUG.
At some point we are talking about semantics here. If a "LUG" (that is
unwilling to call itself an LTC because of diverse interests within the
membership, or whatever) continually displays train layouts at various shows,
then are they not in fact an LTC in LUG's clothing?
It is not as if LTC members are not interested in other themes of LEGO, or that
they aren't social and like to share non-train related MOCs now and then. The
GMLTC has members who are into ALL kinds of things (LEGO themes, that is;-) but
aside from a few tanks rumbling through the town, we focus our attention *as a
club* on building stuff for our train layout.
In the TCLTC, we are trying to incorporate some traditionally non-train related
themes into our layout, but more on that some other time.
The differences can be great, or in fact, semantic. I think LTCs have a good
idea as to what they are about. I think LUGs don't have it so easy. "LUG" is
so vague that it can mean almost anything, and if this ambiguity is appealling
to members of a given LUG, then I'd say that the two groups are very different
in meaning from one another.

| Hi All, I would like to get some feedback from members of LUGs and LTCs on their opinions of what the differences are.
