More Loops at shows...

We found that at shows the more train running the better. We originally
started with the concept of two main lines, but as the layout got bigger it
took longer for the trains to come round! So we started adding local loops.

Now we think in terms of five sizes/types of "loops", here are the goals for
each.

Main line: For really long trains with long and/or wide train cars.
Clearence around curves. No "S" curves. Use curve-straight-curve-straight...
around the corners.

Medium loop: For long trains. Some easy "S" curves. Some curves in a row OK.

Local loops: For short trains with maybe 2 axle rolling stock, for example:
industrail area - switcher pulling a few freight cars
wildwest - small steamer pulling 2 or 3 short coaches
city trolley line - light rail or trollley

Ping-pong: not a loop, often RCX controlled, sometime mechanically controled
light rail, trollley, cog, monorail...

Yard (round house, linear/turn-table): There is some disagreement on this
one but I think of a yard as mainly a static display.

One of the new features of the MichLTC layout was Steve Ringe's home layout
module "plopped in" to a section of the show layout. (it therefore contained

This sentence should finish " to allow running trains without interfering
with main show loop operations". We think we may want to add more local
loops in future shows to increase the amount of motion

I also feel local loops are a good thing. PNLTC has been running several
local loops also haven't they? Of course I'm doing local loops using 12v
so I can do automated turnouts and block control without nearly so much
work :-) (and I may one day get an uncoupler, but I suspect the various
fan built ones are much better than 7862).

(...) Minor nit: Just because you don't have trains moving doesn't mean it has to be a 'static' display. Other animations are crowd-pleasers, too! In our previous layout, people would comment on how the windmill on the farm scene was turning. I (...) (23 years ago, 15-Jan-02, to lugnet.trains)
