This'll be long:

EMD, has an angled cab roof, and a 6 axle EMD is a SD, and a 4 axle EMD is a GP.
GE, has a rounded cab roof (with the exception of the Dash 9, AC4400, and
AC6000, i'll explain them later), a 6 axle is a C, and 4 is a B.

EMD has other letters too, a FP45 is a Full width body, Passenger
locomotive, a SD is Special Duty, a GP is General purpose.  So, as in my
case, a SD40-2F is a modified (by EMD for CPR) is a Special Duty 40-2 (the 2
meaning second pordction or rebuild) Full body.  Also there is M, which
means Safty, or Isolated Cab, and AC (obvious), Altrenating Current.  A
model, common now, is a the SD70MAC, or Special Duty 70 Safty Cab AC).
also on older loco, a B unit is hooked up to another, mostly A unit, to make
one.  Railroads, mostly SF, have rebuilt wrecked locos to make B units, by
removing the cab.

Some other letters:
MK, Morrison-Knudsen rebuild
X, not sure, I never figured that one out

GE uses A, B, C... as locmotive model types, simalar to the Air Forces air
crafts.  So there would be a B30-7A, B30-7B...
GE also uses Dash 7,8,9 for loco styles, such as a B30"-7"A or a Dash 9
(C44-9W, the DC version of an AC4400)  The numbers of new locos are usually
the HP rating, AC4400, AC6000...
CW, stands for Safty Wide Cab.
Also there are the GE "U"-boats, the U stood for Utility.

The Newer large locos are easy, the GE's have a sort of flat vent at the
rear of the long hood, while a EMG may have them, like on the SD80/90MAC
fleet, they have a angled vent under the flat part.  The SD70MAC has no
angled vents, all are flush with the long hood.
The wide cabs have differnces too, the GE's have a "V" in the center, so
from the top it look like this |V|, sort or, the two corners slowly slope
off.  An EMD, on the other hand, has a slope in both sides at about a 45
degree angle.

Older loco are easy from the top, a GE has grill type vents, while an EMD
has round vents.  The cab roof are differnt so, that much is easy (explained
earlier).

Now on to #'s
An SD45 has steep angled vents at the rear, and its the only one to have
these, other then the SD40-2X (i think)
The SD40-2 has long walkways on the end, because it was built on the same
frame as a SD45.
The SD40-2F is a wide body, and can be picked out by the "Draper-Taper",
behind the cab.
More later, i got to go eat...I'll reply to this message with more body
styles, and websites.

And for more... My Favorite train site: (URL) off, the EMD SD's and other 6 axles... SD7, high nose: (URL) curved roof, curved fuel tank, little Dynamic Brake housing (angled vent half way along the long hood). SD9: (URL) Curved roof, curved tank, (...) (23 years ago, 16-Mar-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) Nope. The -2 means that the electrics/electronics (the control gear) is based on circuit boards, that are individually replaceable and more reliable than the older control gear. Most dash 2 models were new builds, rather than rebuilds. (...) (...) (23 years ago, 16-Mar-01, to lugnet.trains)

I figured I'd ask that here, since so many people are tossing around model types, I figure someone ought to know... If I see a train go by, and want to know what model it is, how do I find out, short of slogging through hundreds of pictures & model (...) (23 years ago, 14-Mar-01, to lugnet.trains)
