motorized points - beating a dead horse

Hi All, Currently I am attempting to build an automated hump yard. The main problem I'm tackling is the RCX controlled motorized points. I've spent 7 hours over the last two days trying to build a motorized switch track that will run forever with (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.robotics)

(...) Welcome back. I take it you're not going to be undertaking any battleship models any time soon, then? LFB will be disappointed, I'm sure. ++Lar (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

My Change Of Heart (I'm Back!)

Hello everyone, I've recently gone through a radical change of career plans. I've passed the Railroad Institute entrance exam, as a result, I've cancelled my date with Uncle Sam (the Navy). Also, I've reawakened from my LEGO dark ages and have (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

The grate piece (30036) was originally suggested by Ben Fleskes for tankers, but I stole the idea and in fact mistakenly reversed it and got... (URL) the bottom of page. Only prob is that it's a 6 wide part. (sorry John) SteveB (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: Tank Car Sketch

Very nice work Kevin, I am also disappointed that I didn't see those sets first, and try out this idea! Are you intending to make enough to match the petroleum refinery photo that was shown to NALUG members a while ago? For the base, someone else (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

Re: Hobby Trains are increasing in popularity

I once read that hobbies like mrr do better in times of recession. The MS report would then agree with this as our economy has been showing signs for some time of slowing down. The reasoning of up-sales in times of a slower economy is that people (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

Re: New Train Cars and Locos

On the idea of losing the buffers... I'm a newbie to the Train comunity since I just had to get the 4561 on sale for my son for x-mass. Has anyone considered making a boogie car? One set of trucks w/two piviot points for two cars. I've seen these (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains, lugnet.trains.org.wamaltc)

  Re-reply: 9v motor dying

Thanks everyone for the info. I ran it again today. Slowed down and stopped. I smelled it and there was an odor of over-heating (burning sounds too dramatic), that my other motors do not have. I waited 5 minutes, tried it again. This time, it ran (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: 9v motor dying

In playing... I accidentaly discovered a way to break in and loosen up neew engines. Using a battery box from my 8480 shuttle... The torqe is incredible. But do be careful, short runs only. That much amperage is a bit warm. Fred (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: Tank Car Sketch

G'Day Damm you guys are fast ! I was just doing the same thing and though (ha!) that I would be the first to post. (ha!) Anyway, my version came out about the same. This just shows the foresight of moving to 8 wide ! (grin/duck) Hopefully oneday we (...) (24 years ago, 30-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: 9v motor dying

(...) My guess is that the grease has dried up and the things slowly seizing up. As it heats up it causes my friction etc... As for a train motor, same thing I'd wager. The Train motors have a little metal heat switch that breaks the current when it (...) (24 years ago, 29-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: Lifespan of a motor?

(...) I too have been running the motors in extended periods of time, but it has always been at full speed. Have you been running them for lengthy periods at very low speed with a PWM controller? This is an issue since some motors have a tendency to (...) (24 years ago, 29-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: Lifespan of a motor?

(...) lol We at the GMLTC have run trains for 5+ hour stretches and the motors run like champs. Sometimes on longer trains they poop out and we give them a rest. That's all they seem to need. The motors are well designed to run for long periods and (...) (24 years ago, 29-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Lifespan of a motor?

Having just acquired my first LEGO trains last month, I'm concerned about keeping them happy and healthy. I'd like to have the trains run at low speed for an extended period of time (like an hour or so), but I'm also worried about what this might do (...) (24 years ago, 29-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: 9v motor dying

(...) First, if the motor is relatively new, you probably can get CA to replace it. But it may be more fun to try to fix! I'm guessing here. Some people seem to have a problem with people guessing, so take it for what it's worth. Don't try any of (...) (24 years ago, 29-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  Re: 9v motor dying

(...) No help from me, sorry. I have a 9volt train motor that does exactly the same thing! I have the same questions as do you. Hmm.....Anyone else with the same problem? later, James Mathis (24 years ago, 29-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)

  9v motor dying

I have a 9v motor that works for about 5 minutes, then slows down, and eventually stops. Wait 5 minutes, and it can go a little bit, then slows down, and stops. It's like the motor's juice needs to be re-charged. Is this motor dead? or is there (...) (24 years ago, 29-Nov-00, to lugnet.trains)
