One way to get rid of boxiness and conformity might be to make your
buildings a bit bigger, and model them after real-world buildings or
pictures of buildings that have some character. These could be town halls,
churches, strip malls, or whatever you want. Add some other nice city
touches like statues, fountains, parks, etc.
Populate the town with interesting people doing interesting things.
Another question to ask yourself: what excites you?
