I certainly like the way most of the new cars use only one shock
absorber per wheel.  That is much more realistic than the twin shock
abosorbers from 8880.  It is also better, as two shock absorbers add
more friction to the suspension, making it less useful.

agreed, apart from the fact you get less shock absorbers included in the kit
to use for MOCs! :-)

but the one thing that disappoints me is that it's not that much
different from 8448 - functionally it's very similar, and
decorative details are very sparse. It was a quicker model to
build.

I can see that it is mostly similar to the 8448 in terms of function:
The only addition is the four wheel drive.  Is the gear box mostly the
same as the one from 8448?

Yes, the gearbox looks to be essentially identical to 8448.

The 8448 featured the unique and genious modular construction.  I can
imagine that the 8466, without this feature, must be much less
complicated to build.  It is probably more rigid, too.  The 8448 had a
problem with a flexing chassis, didn't it?

I found the modular constuction of 8448 made it less complicated to build
than, say, 8480 or 8880, which do not have modular construction. I think I
found 8466 quicker to build because it was kinda familiar! (i.e. similar to
8448!)

8466 is still built in a modular way, but it does not utilise the inlaid
boxes that 8448 does. 8466 is packaged in the same way as 8457 or any of the
other recent sets - it has modules packed into plastic bags, but these bags
are all packaged loose into an otherwise empty box.

There is no inlay tray at all, as traditional Technic sets (8448 included)
would always have had. I fear that Lego will always package their sets this
way now (because the packaging will certainly be cheaper...) I don't think
we will see modules packaged into small cardboard boxes again for this very
reason. (8448 will be a one-off, IMO. But please correct me if there are
already other sets packaged this way!)

Mind you, I find it quite annoying to figure out what to do with those boxes
when I've taken 8448 to pieces again. I took them and the tray out, and
ended up just putting all the pieces back into the main box loose.

Chris.
