I don't think I understand how using six wheels is going to help you
here.  The problem with the friction and steering will be present also
when using six wheels.  Perhaps you will find the problem even more
severe, as there are four wheels turning, and not two?

I don't plan to have shaft drive between the 3 axles, but 3 engines instead,
one per axle.

This is probably a clever move.  You'll save a lot of work and
friction by dropping the drive shaft.  Placing the motors directly in
the axles is probably the most efficien solution.

How about using an 8459-like setup in stead?  By using central
steering, you don't need to use the 8880-setup at all!  And you're
avoiding the steering/friction problem in the same time!  It's a
winner, in my opinion.

As for the suspension, you can simply let one of the two axles be
tiltable.  That way, all four wheels will always touch the ground, and
you will have a serious off road vehicle!

I've made a working 4x4 chassis with central steering and a twisting
joint in the centre.  I used the large turn table sideways to create
the twisting joint.  The twisting joint in the centre has the same
function as the single tilting axle I suggested above, but looks a bit
more interesting...

By using Supercar sized wheels, this model handeled off road terrain
greatly!  I never finished it off, though.  I mainly like to
experiment with ideas, not finish models...
