It should be simple enough to do, too.  Just a solenoid controlling a valve
piece molded into a piece of plastic, and with a power attachment on top of
it for the control pulses.

It might require a bit of fiddling with on-neutral-off settings, maybe have
it directly out of the RCX unit itself, or as a switch-box built into the
model, but even then it shouldn't occupy more than a 4x2 brick would.
Ideally, 2x2 or 3x2 would be good for compactness reasons, one thing it
would make feasible would be the building of the controls into a smaller
area, and not have to have a lot of space devoted to securing them to the
model itself.  A sort of stackable brick system would be nice, but would
require properly sealed joins between the actual bricks themselves and I
think the current system handles this adequately in any case.

I could go on speculating about what could be made but I suppose I better
leave the designers at TLG something to come up with.  :-)

I'll second this! While I've yet to get the Mindstorms set, electrically

Indeed, while the stackable brick system sounds good for some cases, I think a greater degree of flexibility would be achieved by having the air supplied to each switch seperate hoses as in the current system.
