I would be intrested to know some of the technical details as well. I just
received the LEGO Studios (yes it is shipping from S@H now) but can't use it
on my Windows 2000 computer despite what the catalog description claims. Tech
support says it will only work on Win98SE and the new Win ME.

What camera and software did you use? Does your 15 months include all of the
preproduction set building, etc., or just actual filming and editing?  The
trailer is 1 min 30 sec. How long is the final movie going to be?  The AVI
file which I downloaded was 4+ MB of data and the quality was very poor. I'm
wondering if the picture quality/size issue is a result of the format you
choose for your movie.  The sample movies on the http://www.lego.com/studios
web site are about this length and about his same file size but are much
better quality.  LEGO Studios uses quicktime movie file format.

I've been planning on organizing a group of people to do the entire original
trilogy in stop-motion Lego.
What myplan was, was to setup a webpage for it, get people to sign up to film
one or more scenes, then piece the movies together, and distribute them
online.
I would think this would take qite a lot of planning for a consistency of
image size, quality, lighting, etc. if the final product is to look good.

My e-mail address has changed, so anyone who's interested in participating in
this project please e-mail me at: hobartrus@hotmail.com

I would cross-post this to a movie making group but I don't think one exists
yet. ;)

The camera I used for this film was an aging VHS-C plugged into my computer
via a capture card.  A very old capture card I might add.  The 15 months of
production was basically a lot of waiting.  I am a full time student at an art
school and my assigned projects take precedence over my personal projects.
And 15 months is a very loose judgement of the production.  I had the idea for
a stop-motion animated Lego Star Wars before I even learned of the Lego line.
I spent 3 months working out a script and storyboards.  The only reason this
took so long was because I was at college and all my camera equipment was at
home.  Set building was a simple task, as is there was only one constructed
set, the ice cavern base.  Filming was definatly a learning experience.  Two
scenes, the scene of my Jedi walking through the halls and the Lightsaber
duel, were shot over a two week period.  ALL the other scenes were shot in two
weeks as well.  Once all was shot, I moved into the real labor intensive part,
assembling all the footage and adding the special effects.  This too took a
very long time.  I used the light version of Ulead MediaStudio that came with
my capture card to assemble the footage.  Many of the computer effects were
done in Infini-D 3D software.  Btw-the snow footage is my own computer work.

I have since upgraded my computer, purchased a rather expensive MiniDV camera,
and added a Firewire card to my computer. Just wish I had all that when I
first started this project.  As far as image quality on the video.  From my
little workstation here I have the option of creating about 50 different
combinations of file types and compression.  For this little trailer, I
dropped the audio to its lowest possible setting and compressed the video to a
very poor quality I admit.  I chose this because I'm on a slow modem and
upload times are a problem.  The original footage is 640x480 and contains
stereo sound, but that leads to a big file.  i did make a compressed MPEG
movie for myself with full sound and large image quality, but thats 13 Megs in
size..too much for my webspace currently.

Well before I start writing a novel here, I think Ill hold it at that.  i hope
this helped explain smoe technical aspects.

Chris

(...) I'm sure there are people here who would host it. And there are certainly people who could wait for a 13 MB download. --Bram Bram Lambrecht BXL34@po.cwru.edu (URL) (24 years ago, 13-Oct-00, to lugnet.starwars)
