i don't think you guys are differentiating the releases from both LEGO Direct
and TLC properly. LEGO direct items are S@H and LEGO Retail exclusive items, and
i guess it goes into a trial period before retailers opt to carry them, like the
RBR, Naboo fighter, and santa fe. they operate just outside the grand scheme of
TLC and because of this they are able to produce exclusive sets using existing
parts only. LEGO Direct was responsible for the RBR and Darth Maul sets and yes,
i have seen the darth maul set at retail (fao schwartz at the grove, and some
place else...). LEGO Direct was NOT responsible for, as far as I know, the UCS
TIE nor the UCS X-wing nor the Millenium Falcon* (which was released in the fall
of 2000 whereas the UCS sets were in January of 2000). TLC gave us the at-at,
at-te, falcon, UCS TIE & X-wing, etc. LEGO as a whole is releasing two $100
dollar sets in the same year, but they're coming from different divisions.
given the LOADS of new items this year, lego is competing with itself for shelf
space. i would hope that this set gets released to retail so more fans can get
them more easily.
i'm sure if any of my info is inaccurate someone will jump in (or down my
throat) with a correction.
man it's late and i don't know if i should be posting this in my barely coherent
state.
* - i'm pretty sure it was LEGO Direct that enabled the re-release of this set
around this time last year as a S@H exclusive.

| (...) Yeah, well, even with rapid-prototyping (which we know they're using), new mold designs aren't cheap. S@H exclusives have a much more limited consumer base than retail releases, and anything that sells well enough through S@H to justify making (...) (21 years ago, 11-Aug-03, to lugnet.starwars)
