I guess a reason behind this is that Lego *did* sign a contract, although
the time period hasn't been disclosed, so maybe they're obligated under the
contract terms to keep making Star Wars sets until the contract expires.
(hopefully soon) The worst that could happen is, of course, a contract
renewal, and we all know what that means.

The contract was to have the rights to produce Star Wars sets.  Brad
Justus, senior VP of LEGO Direct, said at BricksWest in no uncertain
terms that there is no contractual reason not to produce any Classic
Space Legends sets.

However, there are legitimate marketing reasons not to do so.  LEGO
Direct is not supposed to be in the business of competing directly
with retail LEGO.  And that's what they would be doing if they
produced a CS Legend.  If consumers have $x to spend on LEGO space
sets, they want all of that $x to be spent on Star Wars.  Brad made it
very clear that there will be no CS Legend as long as they are
producing Star Wars sets, but not because of any contractual
limitation.

(...) Yes that was the Company hogwash he recited. I work in a toy store. Life on Mars sets come in boxes printed; LEGO(the logo) SPACE. So the company's official position is that space sets at retail are ok but Lego Direct isn't allowed to release (...) (23 years ago, 11-Mar-02, to lugnet.lego.direct, lugnet.starwars)

(...) Hopefully, the contract should expire in 2003.And if it does, prepare yourself for a Space Legend set. Personally, I want to see either Cosmic Fleet Voyager, 918 Space Transport or a good old Message Intercept Base as Space legends. Or even (...)
