I don't exactly know the answer to that officially...I'm assuming that they
got a 9 year (3 film) license considering that they are issuing out models
for Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones. That is my best guess.
You are right classic space models are definitely more preferrable to
the starwars models, especially most of the models put out now. I did
like the 2002 catalogue with the star wars section....ATST, Tie Fighter,
and the Imperial Shuttle Craft..."beware you rebel scum!!!" :)
So it looks most likely that you and everyone else will have to wait several
more years before Lego issues out any space legends... :(
