This is one of the most interesting debates I have read for a while, and I
feel the need to put a couple of points forward.
Regarding the topic of big parts vs. bricks, I agree that there are a lot of
sets out there that look like they could be built in 5 minutes, without the
instructions, and most of the pieces will not be suitable for any other
models. However, there is a big market for certain 'big parts' as a read of
many of the LUGNET posts by some talented builders will testify. I have
quite often seen people saying things like 'My new moc isn't quite right as
TLG do not do [a certain part] in the correct colour/size'. I am an
especially big fan of the Star Wars line and feel that it is licences like
this that force TLG into being more imaginative with new parts, as they need
to make to model as close to the 'original' as possible yet still use as
many generic or multi-use parts as they can in order to keep costs down.
I agree whole-heartedly with the sentiments about Bionicle et al. If it
wasn't for the name on the box you wouldn't even be able to tell that is was
Lego!
My final point is regarding aftersales support, which someone mentioned way
back in this thread. I've no doubt that TLG do a good job of replacing
missing parts etc. My gripe is with the website and especially the support
of the Studios sets. I have upgraded to Win XP and looked to Lego for
updates to the software as it wouldn't run on the new OS. When I looked
through their, very sparse' technical FAQ I found that they did not even
acknowledge the existence of XP, but considered ME to be the new,
yet-to-be-supported version of Windows. This part of the site has been
running for over a year and has been updated only 3 or 4 times. That is not
good support.
