According to "Star Wars: Behind the Magic" CD' s from Lucas Arts, there were
several different R2 type units used (and could be seen in very short shots)
in original movies. At least, I remember a dark blue one, a yellow and blue
one, one with red trim, and another with a transparent head dome. Besides,
both R2 and R4 are being classified as "astromech droids" so they both can
be used in X-wing and Y-wing droid sockets. I'm not sure but I think that I
saw a R4 unit inserted in a Y-wing, some where in one of the movies.
