Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
Finished at last - a new MOC and my entry for Paul Hartzog's non-violent space contest: United Earth Space Force Rocketship X-74 "Pathfinder" Pictures on Brickshelf (& hopefully more in the next day or two): (URL) Pathfinder is designed for long (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space) !!

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —David Goeb
(...) Great stuff. Perfect look with the Empire-State'ish exterior hull. DaveG (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Trevor Pruden
(...) VERY NICE!! I downloaded each pic so that I can examine each one in fine detail. I really liked all the detail and the way you worked out the confined space so well. One question to the general public: Why do we never see excercise rooms? (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) Thanks! (...) Exercise rooms: In all of the 50's sci-fi books I've read, or in the movies I've seen, they've never even mentioned excercise. I don't think the concept of muscle and bone deterioration due to weightlessness had even occured to (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Mladen Pejic
Superb job Paul! The ships is beautifully streamlined and well designed. I really thought that the interior space would be small, but wow, was I ever wrong! ;-) You managed to fit everything a space crew would need to survive during their long, (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) Thanks! (...) You forget - this ship was built for a /non-violent/ themed contest. Any aliens this crew runs into would have to be the friendly kind :-) (...) I don't want to hear about it - we don't even get the Sci-Fi Channel where we live (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Mark Sandlin
(...) I dig that classic 50's style. Well done! <snip> (...) Uhhh.... well... I think the end result looks good, but something about building it in rainbow warrior fashion just offends my sensibilities. Oh well, it's still got a great form. :^) ~1st (...)         Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Sean Forbes
(...) Argh! Three days! That's all I needed to finish MY pulp sci-fi ship for Captain Crash! ARG! Actually, now that I think about it, it's nice to have some directly comparable competition for the Space contest. :) Excellent job with the lines on (...)          Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) Thanks! Sorry I beat you to the announcement - I've been working on this for quite a while. And may the best rocket win... (...) Like I said when you posted your rocket, it's tough to make those smooth shapes. I made an earlier, smaller (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —George Haberberger
(...) Brickshelf is acting funky, so I'm only getting glimpses of it, but it does look great. A lot of people are making these now, (of course, I want to make one too, in homage to all that 1950's SF). I can't wait until brickshelf stabilizes. (...)         Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Steve Runnels
That's awesome! You know what? When you take pics of it in B&W like that it works out BETTER to use other colors because then you have a wider array of "grey" to work with. I love it... (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Jeremy H. Sproat
(...) running out of words, so when I'm coherent again I'll speak up. :-, (...) Definitely valid. I dodge this issue by using CAD to get uniform colors. Hey, just for kicks, after the contest could you publish color pics? Cheers, - jsproat (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) Wow, thanks! (...) That's how I rationalized it - it's no more cheating than building a CAD model is. (...) I've got some more pictures I hope to get up in the next day or so, and that includes one or two color ones. - Paul (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Wayne McCaul
Hey Paul, Stupendous! I have to say that I'm a *huge* fan of retro-scifi. I love the way you've capture that 50's-G-Rated-News-Reel feel. The whole thing reminds me of all those cheezy Creature-Double-Feature sci-fi movies I grew up on. I still love (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) Thanks! I wouldn't have built a ship like this, or made that newsreel-thing, if I weren't a huge fan of 50's sci-fi myself. It's good to know that I'm not the only one! (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Harvey Henkelman
(...) Not heresy! Beautiful job, it really does look like something we'd end up seeing on MST3000. As long as it's black and white, the multicolored bricks do their job well. -Harvey (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —A. Mark Wilburn
(...) No more so than rendering in LDraw or something similar. And Flash Gordon would be proud! (Ya know, I think we're going to start seeing more 'rainbow warriors' with greyscaled photos, since it worked so well here). A suggestion (not a (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) Cool! (...) I considered this - using the colors in a more structured way - but for certain sections (the engines, in particular) it wouldn't have worked. All the special parts I needed to use were in all sorts of different colors, so I ended (...) (24 years ago, 17-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Eric Sophie
Yes, I like it! It feels like I am seeing a movie trailer, I want to see rest of the film now!! good luck! Eric (...) (24 years ago, 18-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Daniel Jassim
Gee, that's swell! It really has an art deco appeal to it! Actually, I think your idea to build it with every different color is clever and practical. I'm glad you shared that detail with us. Since it's going to be in B&W anyway, why limit yourself (...) (24 years ago, 18-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
Hi Everybody - Thank you all for the great feedback I've been getting! As promised, I've uploaded some more pictures to Brickshelf: (URL) cartoon bubbles this time, but these may give you a better idea of how the whole thing fits together. I wish my (...)          Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) Don't do that! I really dig your microscale fleet! (that new colony ship was expecially cool) (...) I'm not familiar with this term, but I assume it to be Something Good :-) (...) Thanks! (...) (24 years ago, 19-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Greg Howell
Not only do I absolutly love this ship, (I half expect Marvin the Martian to be in there somewhere) but I really like the real color scheme. Rather than accept the fact that you were going to go black and white, you made a very consious effort to (...) (24 years ago, 19-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) I don't know that I'd go so far as to say it's better in color, it's just... different. I did really make an effort to choose colors of similar vales and to keep the pattern as random as possible - I'm glad you appreciate it. And you make some (...)         Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Matthew Gerber
Paul, I'm sure I won't be the last to say that you did a wonderful job on the ship model. This is the type of building I aspire to. I don't know if you were going to be displaying the model to the public, but I had a brainstorm I thought I would (...) (24 years ago, 21-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson
(...) Thanks! (...) Actually, I've been itching to take it apart already - I need those bricks for a couple of new MOCs that I'd like to work on. (...) I love it! This really would be a fun idea - of course it would have to be a pretty large screen (...) (24 years ago, 22-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Davidson
Paul, great stuff. From the sounds of things, you've hit upon a whole new side to space Lego and beat the rest of us to making something of it. I just came up with the idea of a big, campy red-and-white-checkered rocket ship (kind of like the Tintin (...) (24 years ago, 23-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Now THIS is classic space! —Paul Hanson

There must be something in the air that we all get the same (...) (24 years ago, 24-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Captain Crash teaser (Was Re: Now THIS is classic space!) —Sean Forbes
(...) Or in the water. Or maybe it's subliminal communist messages on T.V.? I'm actally glad that you posted your before I finished mine. As mine is the smallest of the three I've seen (did I mention that Wayne's is SIX FREAKING FEET TALL?) I was (...) (24 years ago, 24-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Captain Crash teaser (Was Re: Now THIS is classic space!) —Paul Hanson
(...) Yeah, that's it! (...) Wayne's is indeed impressive - but I think a cleverly designed smaller model can be equally impressive. It's harder to have a nice shape or to fit all the features into a smaller model. For these reasons, I'm really (...) (24 years ago, 25-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Captain Crash teaser (Was Re: Now THIS is classic space!) —Sean Forbes
(...) Too true. In fact, after reading a "Might have been" short story on Goddard and his experiments in "Liquid Fuel Rockets", I've planned out a whole new engine compartment. (...) Well, it looks like the "little bit of sorting" turned out to be a (...) (24 years ago, 25-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Captain Crash teaser (Was Re: Now THIS is classic space!) —Sean Forbes
(...) Ah but you're wearing SHOES! adding at least four inches to your height :*P Besides, I like dealing in round numbers, they won't let me play with angular ones as I might put my eye out. ;*) Sean (24 years ago, 25-Apr-01, to lugnet.space)

Re: Captain Crash teaser (Was Re: Now THIS is classic space!) —Andrew Tyrone
