The main "frame" of my ship will resemble a crib -- a kind of boxy
framework, using technic beams.  The base of this framework will be the
floor the lowest deck ("Blue Level"), with cargo holds, launch bay, and
such.  The three decks above will consist of modules that can be stacked,
within the framework.  The actual side hull and detailing of the ship will
be attached to the framework with hinges of some kind (I'm still deciding
between conventional and technic), and will open outwards to give access to
the innards of the ship.  This way, every part of the ship can potentially
be accessed from both the side and from above.

Why do you have to choose between conventional and Technic?  Mix'n'match!  It
sounds like a good concept, though.  I'll be interested in how it comes out!
Mine will unfortunately not begin construction until at least 10 January.

The bridge will be a separate structure attached to the front of the ship.

That's a neat idea that should add some "non-box" features to it.

I'm going to try building turbolifts to go between decks.  They'll probably
only be big enough for one minifig at a time.

Now *this* I want to hear more about!  I'm toying with elevators, but I can
never seem to work out one that will hold its level, be workable, and not be
open to the rest of the ship!  It may just be that I don't have any train
doors.

I'm also hoping that the frame is strong enough to keep the ship together
well.

Ah, always the most difficult part.  I'm kicking around buying a steel rod or
two to run through a compartment near the base of the ship.

Note to L F Braun: I've never seen Silent Running :) but the contents of my
ship are partially inspired by Star Trek: TNG and Babylon 5.

If you can, watch Silent Running--it's a 1973 classic of SF (and the
inspiration for the Mike and the Mechanics song of the same title).  It's • about
the last forests of Earth, which have been transplanted to large spaceborne
biospheres tended by the film's protagonists.  I forget how it comes down, but
the order comes down that a war is beginning and the caretakers are to destroy
the biodomes (the reasoning doesn't come to mind at the moment) and return to
Earth.  Instead, the protagonist refuses--he kills the other crewmembers,
destroys some to make his superiors believe he's fulfilled his duty, and he
absconds with the last of the biospheres intact.  At the end, it's just him • and
three proto-Gonks named Huey, Dewey, and Louie, sailing silently through space
(one of the three robots gets offed before the end of the movie, though). • It's
kind of sad, really--but a good way to spend a few hours and a few bucks on • the
rental.

It's an interesting movie to see back to back to back with Darkstar and The
Black Hole, I can say that at least.

best,

Lindsay

PS:  A better synopsis is at http://starriders.net/sfmovies/silent.htm

I really can mix 'n' match.  My ship [under construction since Mon., Dec. 27,
Quasar Class Battlecarrier] is 82 studs long and within 10 studs of 32 studs in
width, and approximately 14 studs high [I only measured its length].  Most of
it is built of just standard Lego bricks and plates, but the openings of the
bays are supported by Technic beams and pegs, as is the frame supporting the
huge aft 1/4 dome pieces [studs pointing rearward].  And, the battlecarrier's
hyperfusion power core has many studs pointing to the sides.  Plus, its two
pairs of sliding doors are also pretty cool.  The rest, you might see when the
entries are posted at http://www.legalaxy.8m.com [is that the right site?].  It
even has a standard color scheme [Altair Imperial setup].  Never do the
"rainbow warrior" scheme, instead build with a standard setup.  Mixing and
matching is also useful.  Such things, used right, can make anything look GOOD.
