The bridge will be a separate structure attached to the front of the • ship.

That's a neat idea that should add some "non-box" features to it.

To further the non-box-ness of it, the three main viewports in the front are
the large round bubble-windows from the Divers sets.

I'm going to try building turbolifts to go between decks.  They'll • probably
only be big enough for one minifig at a time.

Now *this* I want to hear more about!  I'm toying with elevators, but I • can
never seem to work out one that will hold its level, be workable, and not • be
open to the rest of the ship!  It may just be that I don't have any train
doors.

I'll get train doors if I have to, but I'm hoping instead to use sliding
doors on the stationary decks.

Another problem I may have to deal with is that of the turbolift "sticking"
to the sides of the shaft, and not going down properly.  I might use an
elastic band attached to the underside of the car and to the bottom level of
the ship to provide extra pull in that direction...and a string with a
wind-up wheel or motor for pulling the lift upwards.

Another idea is that because I plan to have two symmetrically-arranged
turbolifts, I could have a long string attach to the underside of one, go
down the shaft and loop underneath the bottom deck to the opposite turbolift
shaft, and re-attach to the underside of the *other* turbolift car.  That
way, raising one turbolift automatically lowers the other. :)

I'm also hoping that the frame is strong enough to keep the ship • together
well.

If you can, watch Silent Running--it's a 1973 classic of SF (and the
inspiration for the Mike and the Mechanics song of the same title).  It's • about
the last forests of Earth, which have been transplanted to large • spaceborne
biospheres tended by the film's protagonists.  I forget how it comes down, • but
the order comes down that a war is beginning and the caretakers are to • destroy
the biodomes (the reasoning doesn't come to mind at the moment) and return • to
Earth.  Instead, the protagonist refuses--he kills the other crewmembers,
destroys some to make his superiors believe he's fulfilled his duty, and • he
absconds with the last of the biospheres intact.  At the end, it's just • him and
three proto-Gonks named Huey, Dewey, and Louie, sailing silently through • space
(one of the three robots gets offed before the end of the movie, though). • It's
kind of sad, really--but a good way to spend a few hours and a few bucks • on the
rental.

Now that you mention it, I have seen the ending on late-night TV.  I just
didn't know what I was watching.

(...) Why do you have to choose between conventional and Technic? Mix'n'match! It sounds like a good concept, though. I'll be interested in how it comes out! Mine will unfortunately not begin construction until at least 10 January. (...) That's a (...) (25 years ago, 30-Dec-99, to lugnet.space)
