G'day Kevin,
I did pretty much a full tour, so maybe I can help out. Whenever you're
in an elevator, there is a little panel in the middle. There are two
tiny red buttons on the right of the panel. If you put your mouse
there it will say "Up" or "Down". You can go to all levels this way.
Also in some places there are stairs. They are hard to see sometimes.
Look on the main green map for narrow areas that dead-end, those are
often stairs. These allow you to get into sections that aren't
accessible by other means. For example, there is a Control area
above the Hangar Deck that you can only get into (and out of) by
stairs.
As for navigation, when you're in first-person views, just move the
mouse around slowly and look for it to change to an arrow, and then
read the text next to it. When you're in a top-down view, such as
when you're in the crew quarters, put the mouse over doorways or
stairs to see instructions of where you can go. It helps that in
a top-down view, only the room you are in is colour, and everything
else in the picture is in greyscale. It's subtle, but it helps you
figure out where you are and how maybe you can get out.
Always keep an eye on the green map, it is your friend! :] It
shows where you are in which direction you are facing. Watching
this will keep you from getting frustrated when you try to walk
out of certain doors..., that are actually windows! ;]
I did this a lot...
In some rooms there are "hot objects" too that do things. Some
you have to click on (you'll see a hand icon). Others move
automatically when the mouse is over them.
All in all it's still an awesome piece of work!! :]
