I have one in my hand now - you were pretty close, Tim - it's actually
closer to 9 studs in diameter. They do look rather large if you're not used
to them, but they're still dwarfed a bit by two old large Technic wheels
used side-by-side, which was what I actually preferred to use for large
futuristic ground vehicles. Funnily enough, the old large Technic wheels
seem to have been a lot easier to obtain than MCM wheels.
