Phil, Matt, other Windows/LegOS users-
If anyone would like to write them up, I'd love to add Windows
instructions to my LegOS HOWTO. Only problem is that I cannot test them
myself, so I need others to provide them and make them usable.

Currently, I (like Markus) link to Gavin Smyth's page. Is the problem that
Gavin's instructions are insufficient?  Unclear?

Alternately, arthurdent.dorm.duke.edu (which hosts the HOWTO) is no
longer my primary work machine, and as a result, I can host a complete
Windows build on it, at high speed*. If anyone who has a working build can
zip it and send it to me or let me know where I can grab it, I can post it
on my site for access for future Windows users.

Similarly, for Linux users, I will probably soon be packaging the
cross-compiler, LegOS, the HOWTO, and emuLegOS into .deb files for users
of Debian Linux. Hopefully, it won't be too difficult to turn those into
.rpms for RedHat users. Please let me know if you'd be interested.

-Luis

*This assumes that I don't get more than 10,000 hits a day, the limit
allowed by the school. Unless it gets posted to /. again, I don't think
that will be a problem.

I mean - the only info out there for Win98 users is confusing at best.
What is needed is a VERY SIMPLE explanation - basically, several steps.
Download THIS zip file
Unzip it to THIS directory name
Put the new directory in your path
Type THIS in to test it.
Etc.

I'm someone will do that eventually....until then, I don't have enough free
time to mess around with LegOS...although I love the OS. (I want to be able
to use Arrays!)

You are sooo smart.

I am not sure I completely understand everything you have said in the last • two
posts, but if I just blindly type "make --unix" IT WORKS!!!.

I will now go back and see if I can follow everything you have suggested • and
see if I can learn this stuff to the next level, and possibly clean it up a
bit.

I am so greatful for your help.  It has been so frustrating, and I • appreciate
all that you have done.  Once I can get to a more complete understanding, I • am
going to write a list of steps that the typical win 98 user can follow to • get
legOS working.

Thanks, -Phil Watt

setenv MAKE_MODE UNIX; export MAKE_MODE

Damn, I am too used to tcsh, and yet I still remembered the export.

Make that:

MAKE_MODE=UNIX; export MAKE_MODE

(followed by make)

Again, make --unix should also do the trick if that is easier to • remember.

Oh.  My MAKE_MODE environment variable is set in the .bat I use to start • a
cygwin shell.  That file has a SET MAKE_MODE=UNIX line in it, among other
things.  I do not set MAKE_MODE every time I start a cygwin shell, that
would be too much of a pain.

Also.  Regarding cygwin, if you can get the HOME environment variable set
to an appropriate directory (perhaps in the same .bat, perhaps as part of
your Windows environment), you can place a .bashrc (or maybe also • _bashrc?)
in that directory, and use it to set up bash.  Very handy to know if you
are new to Unix and want to configure things to your liking.  I mention
this because a .bashrc would be another good place to set things like
MAKE_MODE.

The existing HOWTO is nice, and I know he worked hard on it BUT.... What I think we need is a howto with a REALLY narrow scope... which, ironically, would cover more people than any other group. You know what's probably out there right now? A ton of (...) (25 years ago, 28-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)
