no long range IR from laptop says Lego

Does the Lego USB IR tower, when set to long range, sometimes draw more than the 500mA allowed? Or do laptops generally not reliably supply 500mA? Or are we facing some deeper analog issue here, like not ramping up to 500mA from less mA fast enough (...) (22 years ago, 12-Feb-03, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

Use a powered USB hub with the laptop. The power required for the USB IR Tower will come from the powered hub, rather than the laptop. - Rob (...) (22 years ago, 15-Feb-03, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

Kindly offline I am informed: yes indeed, some laptop designs have been seen to support less than half of the specified 500mA max load for USB bus power. I wonder how many mA the USB IR tower does need. Pat LaVarre (22 years ago, 12-Feb-03, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

How about LegOS & IR "long range"?

Well. It's a bit strange that under LegOS you "must" work only in "near"/"short range" mode. So I've modified my kernel to work always in "far" or "long range" mode (that works with near too)... Now I'm able to upload kernel and .lx to my RCX placed (...) (25 years ago, 13-Feb-00, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)

The Spybotics contain similar but shorter optical fibers. I also read that the (...) (22 years ago, 5-Nov-02, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

(...) Its USB descriptors say there are two configurations with 100mA (I think these are for low and medium power), and two that require 500mA (high power mode). The LEGO USB Tower Interface Reference doesn't go into more details. Jürgen (22 years ago, 12-Feb-03, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

  USB Tower range

Hi, I recently bought the RCX2.0 and I am a little disappointed at the range for the USB tower. Though configured to be at long range I doubt I can implement a range greater then 5 or 6 feet. Is this normal.? Am I missing something.? Paul Reedman (21 years ago, 7-Jan-04, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

1) If you have a serial tower, there is no reason I can think of to purchase the USB tower.
