Does the Lego USB IR tower, when set to long range, sometimes draw more than
the 500mA allowed? Or do laptops generally not reliably supply 500mA? Or are
we facing some deeper analog issue here, like not ramping up to 500mA from less
mA fast enough to suit the IR tower?
Anybody able to comment?

Special note for Laptop or Notebook users
Laptop computer users may experience issues with the USB IR Tower when trying
to set it to long-range. This is due to the power consumption required from
the USB port. Laptops generally do not have sufficient power to enable long
range for the USB IR Tower. For users who can enable the long-range setting
for the USB IR Tower, be aware those using the tower will drain the battery on
the laptop. We recommend using Short or Medium range for the USB IR Tower or
having he laptop or portable computer plugged into a power source.

| Kindly offline I am informed: yes indeed, some laptop designs have been seen to support less than half of the specified 500mA max load for USB bus power. I wonder how many mA the USB IR tower does need. Pat LaVarre (22 years ago, 12-Feb-03, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)
