| Does the Lego USB IR tower, when set to long range, sometimes draw more than the 500mA allowed? Or do laptops generally not reliably supply 500mA? | (...) To be precise, there is one additional part, it's an additional long clear thick optical fiber. I think it's intended to connect some VLL bricks to the USB tower. | Wow, that answers a lot of questions, all but one: why is the USB's 'long range' shorter than the Serial's distance? Was my speculation of the available power true? | Well. It's a bit strange that under LegOS you "must" work only in "near"/"short range" mode. So I've modified my kernel to work always in "far" or "long range" mode (that works with near too)... Now I'm able to upload kernel and .lx to my RCX placed (...) (25 years ago, 13-Feb-00, to lugnet.robotics.rcx.legos)

| For some reason I'm having a problem downloading with NQC. I previously had the serial tower set up at the end of a track. The rcx on my robot goes up and down it. | (...) No idea. I think these values are used for accounting, to ensure that all devices together don't exceed available power. But I don't know how well this is implemented. (...) | Thanks to Dick Swan's help I have managed to get BricxCC downloading firmware in fast mode with the USB tower. | Since I do the whole web-controllable-rover deal with my bot, it tends to go quite a distance. I recently purchased a USB tower from Pitsco and I must say, even WITH the long-range enabled on the control panel, the Serial tower still beats it. In (...) | Hi, AFAIK only the following changes need to be made to a COMM-driver to work with USB (Windows only): First of all the Lego-USB-Driver has to be installed (happens automatically when you install the MindStorms/RIS-software).
