I am trying to connect my HP49 Calculator with the Mindstorms IR Tower, I thought I had got the protocols right, the Green LED lights when I send the packet but nothing else, no reply from the RCX. Dave, If you can still lay your hands on it, get the Technic Space Shuttle. I know it's an older set, but I still see them in shops occasionally (in the Netherlands). Price is around US$ 120. Having recently purchased my RIS 1.5, faced the challenges within, perused NQC, PbForth, and the Spirit OCX, I came to the following conclusion. Rich, I originally thought that the free upgrade was a software only upgrade. I thought that's what I saw on the MindStorms web site several months ago. The basic difference between PCs/PalmPilots/WinCE IR ports and the RCX is a different physical transmission/modulation protocol. In the PC etc case the commonly used format is described by the IrDa standard (www.irda.org) where seperate IR pulses (...) (26 years ago, 12-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

I received my free (+$3.95 P&H) upgrade kit today and was pleasantly surprised ( or should that be AMAZED, Y-A-H-O-O-O-O!!!! and THANK YOU LEGO) to see that was NOT just a software upgrade, as I had thought, but the full #3803 "RIS 1.5 UPGRADE KIT" (...) Wes, I'm sorry; I missed the Rcx Motor info... If the Rcx Motors start/run with 6V but don't work with the Rcx Outputs, something is 'Funny'. The Rcx, with decent batteries, puts out about 7 volts to a running Rcx motor (full power setting). I'm not (...) (26 years ago, 10-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)

Hi all, If you still want to get a (second) RCX with a power connector, order online from www.legoworldshop.com. Make sure you order the RIS 1.0. The simple thing would be to do the short delay in the software. Identical relays usually 'make' faster than they 'break' due to energy stored in the magnetic circuit. It's hard to do this without active components. If you use a typical small (...) (26 years ago, 9-Nov-99, to lugnet.robotics.rcx)
