Rich,
I originally thought that the free upgrade was a software only upgrade. I
thought that's what I saw on the MindStorms web site several months ago. I
was surprised when I received the free upgrade to get the full upgrade kit
that sells for $24.99 to non-recent purchasers. Yes, the upgrade comes with
61 pieces, as detailed in my earlier follow-up message
http://www.lugnet.com/robotics/?n=8071 . I believe that the upgrade pieces
fill in everything that you would have if you bought the 1.5 (set 9747) in
the first place. sooooo, buy a RIS 1.0 (9719, piece inventory at
http://www.lugnet.com/db/inv/?n=123 ) plus the upgrade (set 3803) and you
get 727 pieces plus 61 pieces =788 pieces rather than the 717 pieces
included in the 1.5 (set 9747). (all nominal counts, you usually get a few
extras). Plus you get 2 CDs, 2 constructopedias, 2 test tracks instead of
one of each. Great deal for $3.95. (of course , if you're Maneesh, you get
the store to pay your $3,95, Nice work Maneesh!) I predict a black market
in 9719's
