1. Hardware upgrade to USB IR tower: Dacta is Lego's educational division.
For some reason, in the US it is known as Pitsco. The Pitsco link you have
found is the only way I know of getting a USB IR tower on its own. It does
not need batteries.
2. Software upgrade to RIS 2.0: Lego sell something called the Mindstorms
2.0 upgrade kit 3805 for £13.99 from the Lego shop at home website. This
will upgrade your copy of RIS 1.5 to 2.0. Note that RIS 2.0 does not work
with MacOS X, not even with virtual PC.
3. Firmware upgrade to RCX 2.0: this is available free from the mindstorms
website, as part of the SDK 2.0 beta. To install it under MacOS X, use
either NQC or Robot Controller.
I hope this answers your questions clearly and unambiguously. If you find a
universal IR remote capable of communicating between USB and an RCX, I would
be interested to know, as I might consider adding support to Robot Controller.
