  RIS 2.0 Problems

Hello, I am involved with a FLL team, and we just horribly bombed at our regional competition. Part of this failure was an interesting and mind-boggling problem that we found. Our programs were not allowing us to edit them in any way. Is there (...) (20 years ago, 16-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) Are you unable to edit them on the computer, or are you having problems downloading them into the RCX? I'm certainly not an 'expert', but I'll help if I can! JohnG, GMLTC (20 years ago, 16-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) I don't use the RIS software, but if you copied the files to a CD, then copied them off, the "read-only" attribute may be set, which could make them un-changable. Just a thought Steve (20 years ago, 16-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) I tried that, and it makes them un-savable, but not un-changable. But maybe there's another file somewhere in the RIS software directory that's read-only that causes the problem? It would be worth checking. ROSCO (20 years ago, 17-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) 1. Can you create and save NEW programs? 2. If yes, can you open, edit, and save NEW programs? 3. If yes, create a temporary folder in your root drive, typically C:, and copy the troublesome program there. Right click on the new temporary (...) (20 years ago, 18-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics, FTX)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) There is a bug that we have dealt with that sounds similar--if a time for a Big Block is set below 0.1, so that all that displays onscreen is 0.0 in a block, it sometimes causes the program to become corrupt. You then can't edit it or do (...) (20 years ago, 19-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics, FTX)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

Hello, thanks for all of the input. To answer some common suggestions: 1. No, the files were not write-protected nor read-only 2. Yes, we were able to create new files, open, edit, and save them, but they in turn would occasionally become corrupt (...) (20 years ago, 20-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics, FTX)

  RE: RIS 2.0 Problems

I know this is a bit late, but we hit major RIS problems the first year we did FLL. We switched to ROBOLAB. No regrets!!!! Even kids who were reluctant to change are sold on ROBOLAB. No comparison. You'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration. (...) (20 years ago, 23-Nov-04, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) I'm beginning to think that this will be the best thing to do, or better yet, switch to using the ScriptEd compiler with NQC. Maybe Robolab for the younger ones, and NQC for the older ones... As stated previously, thank you all for the info, (...) (19 years ago, 4-Mar-05, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) Ergh, don't you have to be a bit careful here, I don't think FLL permits NQC to be used. JB (19 years ago, 4-Mar-05, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) Thanks for the heads up. I didn't know that NQC would be illegal. Isn't it a LEGO product? Andrew Meyer Assistant Coach for the IDEAL Charter School "Cyberwolves" FLL Team (19 years ago, 5-Mar-05, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) In the Rules, under the heading Software, only RIS and Robolab are allowed. (URL) believe that includes the use of LASM under Robolab. (19 years ago, 5-Mar-05, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) I have no idea who or what the governing body of FLL is. I can understand trying to create a level playing field for FLL events. That makes sense, after all, a group that can go out and spend large sums of money on lots of motors and sensors (...) (19 years ago, 6-Mar-05, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) No - NQC is an independently developed OpenSource package - it has nothing to do with the Lego company. Thus, technically, it's a non-Lego part and is ruled out by FLL. Personally, I think that's kinda stupid because the byte-code that ends up (...) (19 years ago, 6-Mar-05, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) From their web site (www.usfirst.org): "FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit organization, that aspires to transform culture, making science, math, engineering, and technology as cool (...)   Re: RIS 2.0 Problems

(...) That, my friend, hits the nail _SQUARELY_ on the head. This issue could in theory be addressed by them producing a new, completely platform independant development environment (perhaps itself being done in Java, so that it would work (...) (19 years ago, 6-Mar-05, to lugnet.robotics)
