To add some further information,

I popped the unit open last night and observed that, as I had hoped,
mechanically the unit should be capable of operating correctly. Each motor
channel has a mouse style slotted wheel and sensor, so the firmware should • be
able to create closed loop control of motor shaft angle and speed!

I also noted that the CPU is on a little daughter board, so it may be an • easier
hack than I had thought to replace it by a PIC or something. Also noted • that
there is external access to the CPU via six little probe holes in the • battery
compartment.

I also noted the disturbing look of "Chinese style" construction. Wires • draped
all over the inside secured with hot glue. Doesn't look up to TLC's usual
fabrication quality - much more like cheap Chinese toy manufacturing • standards
to me.

Sounds like promising news.  I'd do almost anything (within reason) to make
this unit operate better than the paperweight status is it now.  Keep us
posted John!
