Also sprach Todd Lehman:
: p.s. I never shrink or raise the ® symbol when it appears next to
: "LEGO" inside of a hyperlink tag (<A>...</A>), otherwise the underlining
: goes all goofy on me. Fortunately, at least ™ for TM still works great
: without modification inside of <A>...</A>.
Good question .... it seems you have a pretty good answer to it. It
raises the issue - one I've given some thought to since starting on the
FAQ - of how to represent these characters in plain ASCII text.
Invariably these characters are part of extended ASCII and thus are
going to behave unpredictably in various environments.
My solution is to simply use (R), (C), and (TM). They will work on just
about any environment, and they convey the meaning well. In legal
terms, the meaning is what is important, not the actual symbol, and some
standard boilerplate explaining the convention places us squarely within
fair play rules, I feel.
