(...) Ahoy there! You've certainly started at the top! (...) It's always good to see another vessel on hand to fight the English! (...) There's some great work there. You've done a nice job of styling a hull out of bricks, particularly the detail (...) (20 years ago, 7-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates, FTX)

  Re: USS Constitution

Impressive! Kind of makes me want to build the HMS Surprise, the ficticious frigate from the Patrick O'Brien novels, and more recently the movie. It's a little smaller than Old Ironsides. I'm going to bookmark that for inspiration. (20 years ago, 7-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates, FTX)

  Re: USS Constitution

I knew I wanted to get the number of cannons correct so I worked off of that. I originally built a cross section of the hull in three different scales before choosing the final scale. I reckon it's closer to 1:72 or 1:60 scale in terms of the ships (...) (20 years ago, 7-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates, FTX)

  Re: USS Constitution

(...) Cool, Ben! Lots of details, inside and out. It appears to be around 1:48 scale; were you pretty meticulous to actual details in your rendition? (translation: how close did you approach the status of "rivet counter":-) I must say, however, that (...) (20 years ago, 6-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates, FTX)

(...) Why don't you modify the rules you use when running a game? It doesn't seem that big of a deal. ~Clangador (20 years ago, 4-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates, lugnet.gaming)

Re: Give him some prize money! (was: My First ESPG)

(...) Well, no. Dismasting a ship was probably the easiest way - the opposing ship couldn't manuever to make an effective broadside while you can. You don't do that with grapeshot. Further, grapeshot was only really effective from close range, and (...) (20 years ago, 1-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates, lugnet.gaming, FTX)

Give him some prize money! (was: My First ESPG)

(...) But that's braodly historically accurate. For most countries' fleets/ships/captains the whole point of shooting at an opposing ship was to disable it, board it and force the crew (or what was left of them) to surrender. For example, for the (...) (20 years ago, 1-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates, lugnet.gaming, FTX)

Re: My First Pirate Game GMing

(...) I think it is too effective. I'll be giving it a range of 6" and -2 per 6” thereafter. I want cannon fire to be about ship-to-ship combat and not slaughtering the crew while leaving the ship intact. From what I saw, GS is easily the most (...)   Re: how long should bowsprints be?

(...) Your observations are accurate: bowsprits varied from ship to ship. If Lindsay can't give you a formula for a specific class of ship, I suspect one does not exist. Generally the angle of the bowsprit got shallower as time went on. Sloops (as (...) (20 years ago, 1-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates)

Re: My First Pirate Game GMing

(...) Whether grape is "too effective" or not as currently written is the subject of much discussion in ESPG circles. I don't think there has been any firm conclusion drawn as of yet. (20 years ago, 1-Jun-04, to lugnet.pirates, lugnet.gaming, FTX)

  My First Pirate Game GMing

Yesterday I ran a small pirate game for a couple of my friends. It went pretty good. Each started with a class 2 ship. There were 3 large islands and half a dozen small islands. An imperial base and a neutral base. During the game, each captain (...) (20 years ago, 31-May-04, to lugnet.pirates, lugnet.gaming, FTX)

Re: how long should bowsprits be?

Hi Stephen (and everyone): First of all, base pedantry: bowsprits. No N anywhere in it. Second, the substance: Bowsprits varied in length historically, as indeed did the geometries of the bows to which they were attached. In part they were meant to (...)   how long should bowsprints be?

hello everyone, i have a question. how long are the bowsprints on your ships as compared to the length of your respective ship? is there any historical "formula" as to finding the length the bowsprint of a ship should be? i have many pics of ships, (...)
