Your observations are accurate: bowsprits varied from ship to ship. If Lindsay
can't give you a formula for a specific class of ship, I suspect one does not
exist. Generally the angle of the bowsprit got shallower as time went on.
Sloops (as in sloop-rigged, not the "sloop" warship classification) generally
had a longer bowsprit, and could get almost as long as the ship. Other than
that, it seemed to be the individual ship designer's (or re-designer's) choice.
