Nope, that wasn’t me. I’m a drafter (1). I haven’t been to any brick cons yet,

Having spent the last week making Rapid Prototypes, I’m curious about the
type of machine you have in your model shop. Is it an old SLA machine? Or a
ZCorp 3DP?

We have 2 FDM machines and 2 SLS ones. I’d have to go down there to get model
numbers.

I ask not only because I’m interested in running LEGO through RP machines,
but also because I’d like to know how an Architect’s model shop uses this
technology. I know the Architecture school at UCLA (under Greg Lynn) is
(in)famous for making all kinds of freaky organic models with their RP and
CNC machines.

I work for a major appliance company, so we are always making prototypes of
various plastic parts to test fit/function/looks, etc.

I can get you stl files, no problem. Feel free to email me a grocery list of
parts you would like. So long as they aren’t too complicated, I should be
able to model them up during the week and send you all the files you’d like.

I’m also curious about this statement.. I know 3D Studio and AutoCAD can
write STL files.. Are you thinking of modeling DAT parts in one of these
applications and then exporting to STL? Or do you have some kind of
translation software? I’ve done it both ways, but you have a different -
read, “easier” - way to go from DAT to STL, I’d love to hear about it!

We use Pro/E, so I was justing planning to model the parts in mm and then export
to stl. I’ve already got every basic brick modeled (2) plus a few fantasy bricks
that MichLUG was brainstorming. Most parts that Tim would want would be easy
enough to model up. (Bionicle parts could be tricky.) That lattice piller could
be interesting, seeing as I don’t even own one, I might have to guess at some of
the thicknesses, but the 2x2x5 is pretty basic.

(1) All CAD at this point obviously, board drafting is a thing of the past..
*sniff*.
(2) Family model, just type in how wide, by how long, by how tall and
it regenerates into the brick you want.
