Hi Tim,
Since I just spent a week doing this, let me throw in a few caveats:
If you’re talking about going from DAT to reality using an RP machine, you’re
going to have to tweak some of the dimensions. As you know, DAT dimensions are
not the same as real LEGO dimensions. If you try to make a RP 2x4 using the
dimensions of a DAT 2x4, it probably won’t fit like a real LEGO brick. In my
experience, the parts end up being a litle too loose in the OAL dimensions, and
a little too snug in the stud-tube dimensions. The parts will look really good;
just don’t expect them to act like real LEGO right off the bat. With a little
tweaking you could get them to be pretty good, however. BTW I used 1 LDU = .4mm.
LMK what you use and we can compare notes/machines.
Also, realize the parts are going to take HOURS to go through the machine. If
you are the only person using the machine, you’ll probably be able to do one to
two batches a day, depending on how many parts you have and how complex they
are. I was at the RP conference for a week and only got about 20 really small
parts done.
With a Stratasys, you’re going to see the stepover layers on the part - it won’t
have a smooth surface finish that molded parts have. Also, be certain you’re
using a WATER SOLUABLE SUPPORT Stratasys - if you are running them on a
solid-support machine, forget it! It’s going to be almost impossible to get all
the support material out of all those nooks and crannies.
