Hello!

Hello Johannes,

What follows are my opinions only... based on your questions.

I could take a knife and a piece of wood and carve my own parts that fit to the
LEGO system. Would that be LEGO?

I would respond, 'no' they're not.  They would be construction parts compatible
with the LEGO building system, but since they weren't actually made by LEGO,
they can never carry that brand name.

Even LEGO-related?

Yes, I think so. See above.

Would a wooden ship that I
build and man with Minifigures™ still belong into lugnet.pirate?

I wouldn't think so, because the majority of the model/project isn't LEGO at
all.  Again, just my feelings on this.

Would a castle
in LEGO minifig scale but built from real stones still be "LEGO Castle"?

I wouldn't think so.  This, and the ship example above really sound more like
descriptions of other hobbies and/or building systems with LEGO produced accents
being added.

For me the goal is to find building solutions by strictly using pure LEGO parts.

Then your above questions shouldn't concern you.  :)

If I took anything else I could as well do modelling with wood or metal or
plastic kits. But maybe that's just me. Yes, I know even the model builders in
the Legolands are using non-LEGO parts.

Really?  I thought the 'official' policy was that they were nothing more than
pieces that (in theory) you could buy yourself.  From some of the descriptions
in The Ultimate LEGO book it would appear that the only time this rule is waived
is in the case of something that requires a metal inner structure (for example)
to be safe and sturdy enough to be displayed.

.. And I myself did that in my sinful past :-)

I don't consider the odd post-manufacture-retrofitting of a part or two to be
anything to be ashamed of.  Think of it as creating a piece that just _must_ be
missing from the LEGO system.  :)

However, recently I discover that custom made pieces are more and more flooding
the LEGO community. It's fine with me if people like those parts and use them
with their LEGO. After all it's just a hobby and should be fun, and everybody is
free to do whatever occurs to them.

I'm with you.  It really is a personal choice.  If those parts (made or bought)
make the hobby more interesting for someone then who's to say that's wrong.  Of
course the only time this should become an issue is for something like a
competition, where obviously custom parts put one builder at a disadvantage...
perhaps the one using the custom parts if you ask me.  :)

Good questions by the way.  This is a topic that the Meccano builders have had
to deal with for many years.  Some of the aftermarket and custom work done by
them is of extremely high quality.

Best regards,
Allan B.

Should there be a newsgroup

Hello! And therefore: Are custom made parts subject of lugnet.general or any respective theme-newsgroup? Though I do not at all deny the creativity that's put into custom made pieces I still wonder.
