Some clubs build 8 wide trains.  We could be one.  :)

Absolutely. I was thinking more along the lines of how many clubs could allow
us to "rent track" through their layout if we used 8-wide? I'm still trying to
figure out how to run two trains on one track and *ABSOLUTELY* not collide them
- probably by watching the interval between trains, and using the GBC siding to
adjust this if it drifts too far from the proper timing. This does require
detecting all trains and distinguishing GBC trains, but that's doable. I'm just
thinking a really smart siding will take more than one RCX
(loading/unloading/detecting/switching). And no, I'm *NOT* suggesting we go back
to the polarity switches - those were fantastic, but certainly far from
mil-spec.

Actually, many the trains have decoration that sticks out that wide.

Yeah, so it's probably not a problem. OK, accepted.

If we stay with the current 6-wide cars that we have (with the 8-wide sensing
mechanism) would there be a problem with other 8-wide trains triggering the
touch sensors and triggering the GBC sidings?  I can't remember much about the
8-wide trains IndyLUG had at their show.  Were they 8-wide below the bottom of
the car?  Or were they just 8-wide above the wheel trucks?

I don't know, but it's a question that we might like answered before we go too much further with this. Understand we can always limit things (...)
