There's a difference. The task of say getting black bricks out of a box of rice
is not the same as "build rice sorting robots". One of them implies a way to do
something up front.

There's rules which need to be there to keep things from getting stupid. Size
limitations, construction techniques. We only allow Lego pieces because it's an
easy rule to enforce and it makes people think creatively. Otherwise we'd get
RC gyros, custom milled delrin components etc.
Then there are rules which rule out an approach. Again, there's a difference.
Say in the "rice game" we have two rules:
-No Non Lego Parts.
-Robots must use a rake mechanism.
If I built a robot that used a vacuum instead of a rake, the first rule I can
still deal with. I can build a vacuum using cans of CO2 air OR I can use
pneumatics. The second one I can't deal with-because I'm forced to do a certain
thing.

Yes, because they're dangerous to other competitors. If you want to play by the
rules, you'll note that the BrickFest Pipe Racers explicitly rules out external
power supplies because the cables will tangle other competitors.
Anyways, you shouldn't complain-the added weight of your battery box came in
handy on the downstroke.

I'm saying in general, every frickin robotics competition does the base contest.
Aaargh.
I'll take the criticism on Last Bot Standing--it's only different from the
"average" sumo by one factor. I won't on Pipe Racers or Rice, because you could
also then call Maxwell's Demons (from Dave Schilling) a sumo-game. Control the
playfield, and you control the game. Hell, you can consider climbing the
corporate ladder sumo-control office politics and you control the game.
This argument is much better than the random crap we've been seeing on rtl as of
late...at least it's on topic :)
