Good idea.  I think there's a better way though.  Simply use PVC
cement.  Instead of completely coating the inside of the pipe with
cement, use only a few drops.  This will secure the pipe strongly
enough that it can be twisted free at the end of the competition. As
for supporting the entire structure, I think if we supported it in any
series of V-shaped cradles and support could be moved out of the way
of an  approaching robot, assuming nobody builds a robot that move
lightning fast.

(...) I'd favour Trevyn's method over cement, because the whole idea is that the track is reconfigurable from round to round. If the cement hardens, won't it be permanent? BOLTS!!!! It suddenly came to me, about a minute ago: I don't want Ts. I *REALLY* don't want to deal with Ts. And, I agree that friction fit pipe probably will not hold without some sort of support. However, we could use BOLTS! Drill a hole through (...) (22 years ago, 7-Jan-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
