  Pipe Racers Demo Videos

Hey folks, John Guerquin came by this afternoon and we went over to the Home Depot, buying some 1.5" PVC pipe and some 45 deg joints. Total cost for 12' of pipe and four joints? $10- tax inclusive. Anyways, we decided to build some ideas for pipe (...) (21 years ago, 30-Dec-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

Looks cool! One question: Where's the RCX? :) I think it will be a real challenge lugging around an RCX while still being able to traverse joints. Speaking of joints, do you think there will be any T's, or just elbows. Getting a device to drive (...) (21 years ago, 30-Dec-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

(...) It's really quite fun--part of it is because it's in 3D vs the usual 2D building we do (ie, wheeled/tracked floor based vehicle) and at that, you have to work at any angle (because the pipe is 1D, but you can approach the joint at 360 (...) This is so cool! I really look forward to see how this is developed. I imagine it will be quite a trick to get this across the joints. Have you thought about a less extreme joint? 30 deg maybe? (If they make those) I'm including .space in this (...) (21 years ago, 30-Dec-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto, lugnet.space)

  Re: Pipe Racers Demo Videos

(...) We looked at 22.5 deg joints but it's not so much the angle (well, 22.5 vs 90 yes, but...) as the sudden increase in outer diameter due to the joint. Once you build some flexibility for the increase in diamater due to the fitting, most of the (...) (21 years ago, 30-Dec-02, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto, lugnet.space)

  Re: Pipe Racers Demo Videos

(...) So, I was talking with Chris the other day, and he suggested we go straight to doing T's and Y's without stopping for 45 deg joints only as a first event. John Guerquin mailed me about the issue: (...) I think our first attempt at Racers game (...) (21 years ago, 4-Jan-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: Pipe Racers Demo Videos

(...) I'm concerned that we won't be able to support a track of much length without having Ts to support the structure. The weight of a robot with one or two RCXs is quite significant. I don't think friction fit 2" ABS pipe is going to hold. If we (...) (21 years ago, 4-Jan-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

BOLTS!!!! It suddenly came to me, about a minute ago: I don't want Ts. I *REALLY* don't want to deal with Ts. And, I agree that friction fit pipe probably will not hold without some sort of support. However, we could use BOLTS! Drill a hole through (...) (21 years ago, 7-Jan-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: Pipe Racers Demo Videos

Good idea. I think there's a better way though. Simply use PVC cement. Instead of completely coating the inside of the pipe with cement, use only a few drops. This will secure the pipe strongly enough that it can be twisted free at the end of the (...) (21 years ago, 8-Jan-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)

  Re: Pipe Racers Demo Videos

(...) I'd favour Trevyn's method over cement, because the whole idea is that the track is reconfigurable from round to round. If the cement hardens, won't it be permanent? I dont' really want to be dynamically supporting the maze, because it might (...) (21 years ago, 8-Jan-03, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
